Digital SIM card (eSIM): what it is and how it works
June 30, 2026
More and more people are choosing a digital SIM card instead of the familiar plastic card. But what exactly is an eSIM, and how does it differ from a physical SIM card? In this guide we explain it step by step.
What is a digital SIM card (eSIM)?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that's already built into your phone. Instead of inserting a separate card, you activate a profile by scanning a QR code or installing an app. This gives you access to mobile data without physically swapping anything.
What's the difference with a physical SIM card?
A physical SIM card has to be picked up or shipped and manually inserted into your device. A digital SIM card is bought online and installed within minutes, wherever you are. With some devices you can also store multiple eSIM profiles and switch between destinations without swapping cards.
Which devices support eSIM?
Most recent smartphones support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy models and Google Pixel devices. Check your phone's settings to see if the "Add eSIM" option is available. Not sure? Check our FAQ for an overview per brand and model.
How do you buy and activate a digital SIM card?
- Choose your destination and data bundle online.
- Receive the QR code instantly by email.
- Scan the code via your phone's settings and install the eSIM profile.
- Turn on mobile data once you're at your destination.
Frequently asked questions
