Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Turkey

Turkey has three mobile operators — Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone Turkey — and all three have run 4G, marketed locally as 4.5G, since April 2016. 5G arrived on 1 April 2026, when the same three operators switched it on in all 81 provincial capitals on the same day; they are obliged to extend it to the rest of the country by April 2028. Away from those provincial centres, expect 4G for now.

Opensignal measured the new network across April 2026 and found an average 5G download speed of 201.3 Mbit/s against 38.5 Mbit/s on 4G, with uploads at 29.8 versus 13.6 Mbit/s. The early rollout is non-standalone: 5G leans on the existing 4G core, so your phone moves between the two networks without losing its connection.

Roaming in Turkey without an eSIM

Turkey is outside the EU and the EEA, so it is not part of the 'Roam Like at Home' area — that covers the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 Moldova and Ukraine as well. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not travel with you across the border: your operator bills Turkish data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. Ask your own provider what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.

Bringing your own phone: the 120-day rule

A handset brought into Turkey from abroad can be used on Turkish networks for around 120 days without being registered. After that, according to the telecoms regulator BTK, the device is cut off from Turkish networks until it is entered in the central device register (Merkezi Cihaz Kayıt Sistemi), which records devices by their IMEI number. On a two-week holiday this never comes up. It matters if you stay for a season, work in Turkey, or leave a phone with family there — check BTK's own information before those four months are up.
