Arriving at Luanda's new airport
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi at home. Since it opened in November 2023, flights land at Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, about 40km south of Luanda; the older Quatro de Fevereiro Airport has been closed to commercial flights since 1 March 2026. Only turn on data roaming once you've arrived.
Coverage in Luanda and beyond
In Luanda and other urban centres, coverage is generally good; Unitel has the widest nationwide footprint, Africell is concentrated in the cities, and Movicel has the most limited 4G coverage of the three. In urban centres, mainly via Unitel, 5G has also been available since late 2022, though it remains strongly concentrated in cities.
Your own number and calling home
Because the eSIM only provides data, your Belgian or Dutch SIM card stays active for calls, texts and verification codes, so banking and logging in keep working as normal. To stay in touch with family back home, use the eSIM data for WhatsApp or Messenger calls, without foreign call charges.
Bridging a longer stay
For a family visit of several weeks, one plan may not be enough. Check the validity period on the plan page before booking, and if needed buy a second plan once the first is nearly used up — you can even do this while you're already in Angola, as long as you have wifi for a moment.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Angola?+
The eSIM connects to the major local networks (Unitel, Africell and Movicel) for 4G internet in Luanda and other urban centres.
Does the eSIM also work outside Luanda?+
In Luanda and other major cities, coverage is generally good, with Unitel having the widest nationwide footprint. Outside urban centres, coverage thins out, as with any local provider in Angola.
Is buying a local SIM in Angola difficult for visitors?+
Registration is mandatory and you need to show your passport — the physical document, not a copy. With an eSIM you arrange your mobile data online in advance, so you skip that on arrival.
Does my Belgian or Dutch number stay reachable for WhatsApp and banking codes in Angola?+
Yes. The Ariya eSIM only handles your mobile data in Angola; your own SIM card stays active for calls, texts and app verification codes such as online banking. Your device then uses both cards at the same time (dual-SIM).
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Angola eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Angola, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Angola eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
