Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Argentina

Argentina is served by the brands Claro, Movistar and Personal. All three took part in the 5G auction of 25 October 2023 and won frequencies there: Claro 100 MHz at 3.3-3.4 GHz, Personal 100 MHz at 3.4-3.5 GHz and Movistar 50 MHz at 3.55-3.6 GHz, on twenty-year licences. One 50 MHz block at 3.5 GHz went unsold and could go to a future auction or to the state company Arsat. The shape of the market is moving: Telecom Argentina acquired Telefónica's Argentine operations in February 2025, and as of September 2025 government approval had not been confirmed.

The rollout itself is easy to follow. Telecom Argentina claimed the country's first 5G standalone deployment in December 2023, in the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, with 68 antennas at 3.5 GHz by January 2024 and 550 5G sites by September 2025, heading for 750 by the end of that year. That is a few hundred towers in a country this size: 5G here is largely an urban story, and beyond it 4G is your workhorse.

Roaming in Argentina without an eSIM

Argentina is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Argentina is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not make the trip: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, with none of the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. On a route from Buenos Aires to Mendoza or Patagonia, that adds up. The European Commission advises checking the tariff with your provider first.

Buenos Aires and everywhere else: build the trip around 4G

Argentina is big, and its 5G is concentrated around Buenos Aires for now. A few hundred sites sounds like a lot until you spread them across a country running from the subtropics to Tierra del Fuego. The regulator publishes no national coverage percentage in a form we could retrieve, so none appears on this page. What the ITU does measure globally is the pattern to expect here: 66% of urban residents have 5G access against 40% of rural residents (Facts and Figures 2025).

In practice: 4G will be your workhorse, and it is perfectly good for maps, messages, photos and video calls. Download offline maps before a long bus journey or a drive through the Andes, and do not set your expectations at 5G speeds once you leave the cities. Set the eSIM up at home, and you have data the moment your phone finds the network in Buenos Aires, rather than hunting for wifi or a shop on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Which mobile networks operate in Argentina?+

In Argentina you will come across the brands Claro, Movistar and Personal; all three won spectrum at the 5G auction in October 2023. The shape of the market is shifting, though: Telecom Argentina acquired Telefónica's Argentine operations in February 2025, and as of September 2025 government approval of that deal had not been confirmed. The eSIM connects to a local network — there is no brand for you to pick.

Is there 5G in Argentina?+

Yes, but concentrated. Telecom Argentina claimed the country's first 5G standalone deployment in December 2023, in the Buenos Aires metropolitan region, with 68 antennas at 3.5 GHz by January 2024. By September 2025 it reported 550 5G sites, targeting 750 by the end of that year. That is a few hundred towers in a very large country: outside the big cities you will be on 4G.

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Argentina?+

No. Argentina sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Argentine data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.

Will I have internet outside Buenos Aires?+

Plan for 4G. The Argentine regulator publishes no national coverage percentage in any form we could retrieve, so we quote none. Globally the ITU measures a clear urban-rural split — 66% of urban residents have 5G access against 40% of rural residents (Facts and Figures 2025). Download offline maps before long distances.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Argentina eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Argentina, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Argentina eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
