Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Armenia
Armenia has three nationwide mobile operators: Telecom Armenia, trading as 'Team' and wholly Armenian-owned since 2022 (formerly Beeline), Viva Armenia (Viva-MTS), and Ucom. Armenia's EU4Digital broadband profile, which draws on data from regulator PSRC, names them together: 'all three major mobile operators ... continued their efforts to upgrade and extend their mobile networks'. PSRC's own website lists Ucom, Viva Armenia and Beeline among its licensees.
On 4G, the picture is clear: '4G+ (LTE Advanced) technology is now available in all 1,002 settlements of Armenia, ensuring universal baseline coverage', the same EU4Digital profile states. That is a settlement count, not a population or land-area percentage — the two measures are different, and we do not conflate them. 5G is real but still clearly limited: partial deployment across 29 urban and 19 rural settlements — 48 of the 1,002 — including Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor, on non-standalone network architecture using dynamic spectrum sharing and carrier aggregation. Widespread or nationwide 5G is not yet the picture.
Roaming in Armenia without an eSIM
Armenia is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and, since 1 January 2026, Moldova and Ukraine; Armenia is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. The European Commission advises checking that tariff with your provider before you go.
5G expansion: what the licence conditions set out
Regulator PSRC liberalised the 3600–3800 MHz band for 5G on 6 August 2024, by decision of the Minister of High-Tech Industry; a competitive tender for the remaining 300 MHz segment was planned for the end of 2024. That tender's conditions place a set of obligations on the eventual winner(s): priority 5G coverage at Zvartnots, Gyumri and Kapan airports, at border customs checkpoints (for at least 10% of service there), and across 98% of the total length of interstate highways, including newly built sections. These are conditions imposed on a future licence holder, not confirmed coverage today — we do not present them as the current state of play.
In 2024 PSRC also adopted Decisions No. 92 and No. 93, requiring operators to publish detailed information on network access and geographic coverage, including mobile broadband and 5G along the interstate highways. Starlink was granted a PSRC licence in 2024 (Decision No. 384), explicitly aimed at improving access 'in remote and mountainous areas of Armenia'. On competition, PSRC records 746 settlements with broadband from at least two operators and 516 from three or more — both figures up year on year, by 17 and 9 respectively, which the regulator attributes to both investment and 'strategic regulatory support to improve digital connectivity'.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Armenia?+
Armenia has three nationwide operators: Telecom Armenia, which trades as 'Team' and has been wholly Armenian-owned since 2022 (formerly Beeline), Viva Armenia (Viva-MTS), and Ucom. Armenia's EU4Digital broadband profile, drawing on regulator PSRC's own data, names them together: 'all three major mobile operators ... continued their efforts to upgrade and extend their mobile networks'. PSRC's own website lists Ucom, Viva Armenia and Beeline among its licensees. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 4G and 5G in Armenia?+
4G+ (LTE Advanced) is present in all 1,002 settlements of Armenia, according to the same EU4Digital profile citing PSRC — a settlement count, not a population or territory percentage. 5G exists too, but at a far smaller scale: partial rollout across 29 urban and 19 rural settlements, including Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor, on non-standalone technology using dynamic spectrum sharing and carrier aggregation.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Armenia?+
No. Armenia sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Armenian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
Do I need to register a SIM card in Armenia?+
For a physical prepaid SIM, no regulatory source could be found requiring this: neither PSRC nor Armenia's Law on Electronic Communications (HO-176-N) contains a point-of-sale registration clause we could locate. Team (Telecom Armenia) does describe an identity-verification step, with a passport or ID card, for its own eSIM product, but that page scopes itself explicitly to 'individuals and citizens of the Republic of Armenia' — it says nothing about visitors. So we cannot say whether, or how, this applies to a Belgian or Dutch tourist.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Armenia eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Armenia, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Armenia eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
