Who is this Austria eSIM for?
For a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Austria behaves like home: the European roaming rules apply and your plan works. This eSIM solves a different problem. Anyone arriving from outside the EU who wants to buy an Austrian prepaid card on the spot runs into the registration requirement in force since 1 January 2019: without registration using an official photo ID, the card is not activated and only emergency calls go through. An eSIM is bought and installed online before departure. Alongside that sits the group staying in Austria for months, for work or study.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Austria
Austria has one of the best mobile networks in the European Union. In 2025, 5G reached 99.84% of households, and the European Commission counts the country among the eight member states with near-universal coverage. That holds outside the cities too: in sparsely populated areas 5G coverage stands at 98.9% against an EU average of 88.88%, and the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band reaches 53.22% there, more than double the EU average. The Commission does note that rural growth is slowing, but from a near-saturated base. Austria's real connectivity bottleneck is fibre rollout, not the mobile network.
Your Belgian or Dutch plan in Austria
Austria is in the EU, so 'Roam Like at Home' applies: your plan works at your domestic rate, and the Austrian registration requirement for prepaid cards passes you by. Two things still matter.
The first is the fair-use limit on data. On a very cheap or unlimited plan your operator may cap what you use abroad, in proportion to what you pay each month; they have to tell you in advance and alert you once you reach that ceiling. The second applies to long stays — a semester or a winter season, say: over at least four months your operator may check whether you spend more time outside your own country than in it and use more abroad than domestically. Only if both are true, and after a warning with at least two weeks to adjust, may a surcharge be applied.
Frequently asked questions
Do prepaid SIM cards have to be registered in Austria?+
Yes. Since 1 January 2019, prepaid SIM cards in Austria must be registered before they can be activated; the legal basis is a change to the Austrian telecommunications act. You need a valid official photo ID for it — passport, identity card or driving licence. An unregistered new card gets no mobile services at all, apart from emergency calls.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Austria?+
Yes. Austria is an EU member state, so you use your own plan at your domestic rate, and the registration requirement for local prepaid cards does not affect you. Do keep the fair-use data limit and the long-stay rules in mind.
How good is the mobile network outside Austrian cities?+
Better than almost anywhere else in the EU. According to the European Commission, 5G reached 99.84% of Austrian households in 2025 and 98.9% of sparsely populated areas, against an EU average of 88.88%. On the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band Austria reaches 53.22% in those areas, more than double the EU average.
I'm staying a semester in Vienna — does my plan still apply?+
For an ordinary trip yes, for six months of living there not necessarily. The European rules protect periodic travel: your operator may look at your usage over at least four months and can only ask for a surcharge if you both spend more time outside your own country than in it and use more abroad than at home — after a warning and at least two weeks to change that.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Austria eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Austria, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Austria eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
