Mobile internet and 4G in the Bahamas
The Bahamas has two licensed mobile operators, confirmed directly in the regulator's own Public Register of Individual and Registered Class Licensees, revised 3 June 2026: the Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC), which holds an individual operating licence dated 18 October 2024, and Be Aliv Limited, trading as Aliv, whose spectrum licence (26 November 2024, covering the 700MHz, 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz bands) and operating licence (31 October 2024) are both listed by the regulator, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA). Both networks have offered 4G/LTE for years: press reporting traces BTC's LTE rollout back to 2012–2014, and Aliv became the first operator in the Bahamas to offer LTE-Advanced, reported in July 2018. Neither operator nor URCA publishes a current national coverage percentage, so we are not printing one; treat 4G/LTE as the established, working baseline.
Roaming in the Bahamas without an eSIM
The Bahamas is outside the EU's 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and separately Moldova and Ukraine. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not travel with you: your home operator bills Bahamian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the European price caps that apply inside that zone. The European Commission's own advice is to check that tariff with your provider before you fly.
5G in the Bahamas: not yet, per the regulator's own timeline
Unlike many Caribbean neighbours, the Bahamas' 5G story runs the other way: as of the most recent reporting, 5G was still at the licensing-consultation stage, not a live commercial service. URCA extended the deadline for feedback on its proposed 5G framework to 31 May 2026, 5:00 p.m., from an original 8 April 2026 date; that framework covers spectrum allocation and pricing, licensing conditions, rollout obligations, service-quality standards, infrastructure resilience and network security, and which spectrum bands will be made available. Operators themselves were reported as saying 5G is a natural step but depends on a supportive regulatory environment — meaning deployment had not yet occurred when that was said. No reporting through this research date confirms a spectrum award or a live commercial 5G launch by BTC or Aliv. Plan around 4G/LTE for now.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks are there in the Bahamas?+
Two: the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) and Be Aliv Limited, trading as Aliv. Both are listed in URCA's own public register of licensees, most recently revised 3 June 2026.
Is there 5G in the Bahamas?+
Not yet, as far as we can confirm. URCA, the regulator, was still consulting on a 5G licensing framework with a feedback deadline extended to 31 May 2026, and no reporting through this research date confirms a spectrum award or a live launch by either operator.
Is 4G reliable in the Bahamas?+
Both networks have offered LTE for years — Aliv was reported as the first in the Bahamas to offer LTE-Advanced back in 2018, and BTC's own LTE rollout was reported from 2012. Neither operator nor the regulator publishes a current coverage percentage, though.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in the Bahamas?+
No. The Bahamas is outside the EU roaming zone, so the European price caps do not apply, and your operator bills Bahamian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check that rate with your provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Bahamas eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Bahamas, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Bahamas eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
