Mobile internet and 4G in Belize
Belize has two mobile networks, and they remain separately owned companies: Belize Telemedia Limited, whose consumer brand is Digi, and Speednet Communications Limited, which trades as Smart. Both appear in the Individual Licensees category of the Public Utilities Commission's own March 2025 list of operational licensees — the licence tier that covers mobile operators, distinct from the internet-service-provider tiers. Digi's own site markets 4G/LTE devices alongside prepaid and postpaid data plans, so 4G is a reasonable working baseline for a visit. Neither operator's own site, nor the PUC's own Spectrum Allocation Plan, publishes a national coverage percentage, so we are not printing one.
Roaming in Belize without an eSIM
Belize is outside the EU's 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and separately Moldova and Ukraine. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not travel with you: your home operator bills Belizean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the European price caps that apply inside that zone. The European Commission's own advice is to check that tariff with your provider before you fly.
Belize's two networks, and which one the regulator calls dominant in roaming
Digi (Belize Telemedia Limited) and Smart (Speednet Communications Limited) are licensed directly by the Public Utilities Commission and remain two separately owned companies. In a formal market-dominance ruling dated 10 March 2026, the PUC found that Belize Telemedia Limited holds market dominance in the market for Retail Mobile Telecommunications Services, and — in the same determination — in the market for Retail International Roaming Services specifically. That is a competition-law finding about network scale, subscriber base and switching barriers, not a coverage percentage or a quality ranking; the PUC's own ruling does not publish a roaming price or a technical comparison between the two networks. The useful part for a traveller is narrower than it sounds: the regulator's own finding points to BTL/Digi as the larger player specifically in the services a roaming visitor touches, not a claim either of us can make about everyday call or data quality beyond that.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks are there in Belize?+
Two, and they are separately owned: Belize Telemedia Limited, trading as Digi, and Speednet Communications Limited, trading as Smart. Both are listed as licensed mobile operators by Belize's regulator, the Public Utilities Commission.
Is there 4G in Belize?+
Digi's own site markets 4G/LTE devices and data plans, so 4G is a reasonable baseline. Neither operator nor the regulator publishes a national coverage percentage, so we cannot put a number on it.
Which network am I more likely to roam onto in Belize?+
The regulator's own March 2026 ruling found Belize Telemedia Limited (Digi) dominant specifically in the retail mobile and retail international roaming markets. That is a competition-law finding about scale and subscriber base, not a coverage or quality score, but it is the clearest sourced signal we have.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in Belize?+
No. Belize is outside the EU roaming zone, so the European price caps do not apply, and your operator bills Belizean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check that rate with your provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Belize eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Belize, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Belize eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
