Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Bhutan
Bhutan has only two mobile operators: state-owned Bhutan Telecom, which sells mobile service under the B-Mobile name, and the private TashiCell. Two networks for the whole country is unusually few, and it makes the traveller's side simple: your eSIM will land on one of them. 4G is available in the main towns and tourist hubs, and since December 2021 5G has been added in a growing number of districts.
5G in Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing
5G has been running in Bhutan since December 2021. TashiCell switched it on in the Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing thromdes — the urban districts — on 15 December 2021; Bhutan Telecom brought its first 5G site in Thimphu into service on 27 December 2021, twelve days later. TashiCell itself reports that its 5G now reaches 18 dzongkhags (districts), deployed on band n78, with further expansion planned. Outside those places, 4G is what your phone will be using.
Roaming in Bhutan without an eSIM
Bhutan is outside the EU and the EEA, so it is not part of the 'Roam Like at Home' area — that covers the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 Moldova and Ukraine as well. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not apply: data used on a Bhutanese network is billed at your own operator's roaming tariff, out of bundle and without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you travel — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Bhutan?+
Bhutan has only two mobile operators: state-owned Bhutan Telecom, which sells mobile service as B-Mobile, and the private TashiCell. The eSIM connects to those local networks for mobile internet in Thimphu and the other main towns.
Is there 5G in Bhutan?+
Yes, since December 2021. TashiCell switched on 5G on 15 December 2021 in the Thimphu, Paro and Phuentsholing thromdes; Bhutan Telecom brought its first 5G site in Thimphu into service on 27 December 2021. TashiCell now reports 5G in 18 dzongkhags (districts).
Does the eSIM work outside Thimphu?+
Yes. 4G is available in the main towns and tourist hubs — besides Thimphu, also Paro, Punakha, Phuentsholing, Jakar and Trongsa — and where 5G is live your phone moves onto it by itself.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle apply in Bhutan?+
No. Bhutan sits outside the EU/EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills data used on a Bhutanese network at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check what that costs before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Bhutan eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Bhutan, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Bhutan eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
