Mobile internet and 5G in Botswana
Botswana's mobile market runs on three operators: BTC (Botswana Telecommunications Limited), which also offers fixed lines; Mascom Wireless Botswana, mobile only; and Orange Botswana, also mobile only — all three regulated by BOCRA, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority, established under the Communications Regulatory Authority Act 2012 and operational since 1 April 2013. BOCRA does not currently publish a national 4G or 5G coverage percentage, so we're not going to invent one here.
5G arrived in Botswana in stages rather than all at once. Mascom, together with Econet Zimbabwe, switched on a small 5G pilot of four sites around February 2022. Orange Botswana followed with a commercial 5G launch in November 2022 — widely reported as the first Orange Group country in Africa to launch 5G, not to be confused with 'the first 5G network in Africa': South African operators had already switched on 5G two years earlier. BTC, the state operator, is the last of the three to enter the market, with commercial 5G services planned for selected areas of Gaborone from October 2026. None of the three publishes a population or geographic 5G coverage figure.
Roaming in Botswana without an eSIM
Botswana sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine — Botswana isn't among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle doesn't travel with you here: your own operator will bill Botswana data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without any EU price cap. Check that tariff before you fly.
Coverage along the Trans-Kalahari Highway
The most concrete, most current connectivity story out of Botswana isn't a coverage percentage at all — it's a named, dated investment along a real overland route. In October 2026, Botswana's Minister of Communications and Innovation, David Tshere, announced twelve new mobile-broadband-and-voice sites, built with operator Orange Botswana through the Universal Access and Service Fund, along the roughly 1,900-kilometre Trans-Kalahari Highway — the corridor connecting Namibia's Walvis Bay and Windhoek through Botswana to Pretoria and Johannesburg in South Africa. The minister described the aim as reaching 'rural communities, businesses, farmers, and travellers', with further expansion planned through network sharing between BTC and Mascom. It's a genuinely safari-relevant fact: a good stretch of that corridor runs along the same overland routes used to reach Botswana's own wildlife areas.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Botswana?+
Three: BTC (Botswana Telecommunications Limited), Mascom Wireless Botswana and Orange Botswana, all regulated by BOCRA, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority.
Is there 5G in Botswana?+
Yes, but it arrived in stages. Mascom and Orange Botswana both switched on limited 5G in 2022 — Orange's launch is widely reported as the first Orange Group country in Africa to launch 5G — and BTC, the state operator, is entering the market with commercial 5G in selected areas of Gaborone from October 2026. None of the three publishes a population or geographic 5G coverage figure.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Botswana?+
No. Botswana is outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
What about mobile coverage along Botswana's safari routes?+
In October 2026, Botswana's government announced new mobile sites along the Trans-Kalahari Highway, the overland corridor linking Namibia to South Africa through Botswana, aimed specifically at rural communities, businesses, farmers and travellers, with further expansion already planned.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Botswana eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Botswana, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Botswana eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
