Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Brazil
Brazil has three national mobile networks — Vivo (Telefônica), Claro and TIM — plus regional operators such as Algar and Sercomtel and regional players like Brisanet and Unifique, which hold 5G as well. 5G is available in well over a thousand municipalities and in every major city, but coverage thins as soon as you leave the urban areas. For a trip across the country that works out as 5G in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Brasília, and 4G as the network carrying the rest of your route.
Roaming in Brazil without an eSIM
Brazil is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Brazil is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not make the trip: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, and the EU price caps that hold inside the zone do nothing here. The European Commission's own advice is to check the cost with your provider before you travel.
Why we quote no coverage percentage for Brazil
Two counts of Brazilian municipalities with 5G are in circulation: one from the operators' industry association, one from the sector's main statistics site. They differ by hundreds of municipalities, one of them carries no reference date at all, and neither comes from Anatel, the regulator that publishes the authoritative data. While those sources contradict each other, we will not print a number on a product page. What is settled, and what matters for your trip: 5G in the cities, 4G beyond them, and offline maps for a long drive.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Brazil?+
Brazil has three national operators — Vivo (Telefônica), Claro and TIM — alongside regional players such as Algar, Sercomtel, Brisanet and Unifique, some of which also run 5G. The eSIM connects to local networks for 4G/5G internet.
Is there 5G in Brazil?+
Yes. 5G is available in well over a thousand Brazilian municipalities and in all the major cities, but coverage thins out as soon as you leave urban areas. Beyond the cities, 4G is the network you travel on.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Brazil?+
No. Brazil sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Brazilian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
What percentage of Brazil has 5G?+
We deliberately quote no figure. The industry association and the sector's main statistics site each publish a count of municipalities with 5G, and the two totals differ by hundreds. Neither comes from the regulator, Anatel, so we would rather write what is settled: 5G in the cities, 4G beyond them.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Brazil eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Brazil, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Brazil eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
