Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Brunei
Brunei has three mobile operators: DST, Progresif, and imagine — the mobile subsidiary TelBru launched on 7 December 2019 specifically to provide mobile services alongside TelBru's existing fixed broadband business. All three launched 5G together on 22 June 2023. The launch reporting put a figure on it, with its own caveat built in: '90% of populated areas have access to mobile services that are 5G-ready, with ongoing efforts to improve nationwide coverage.' That is a launch-day figure from mid-2023, explicitly described as a work in progress even then, not a re-verified current number — no update to it was found this round. 5G required an opt-in on DST's own plans rather than an automatic upgrade, and pricing was held steady at launch. A mature 4G network was already running well before that: the same reporting describes 4G speeds of '20MB to 80MB per second,' compared with up to 300MB per second expected on 5G, implying 4G was already a long-established, working network by 2023.
Roaming in Brunei without an eSIM
Brunei is outside the EU's 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and separately Moldova and Ukraine. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not travel with you: your home operator bills Brunei data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the European price caps that apply inside that zone. The European Commission's own advice is to check that tariff with your provider before you fly.
Buying a SIM on arrival in Brunei: DST's Easi Tourist SIM
DST sells a dedicated Easi Tourist SIM right at the airport: its own instructions are to 'turn right at the arrivals and you'll see our DST Airport branch' once you've landed, or to visit any DST branch in the country. The only requirement DST states is to 'bring your passport and travel documents with you.' The product is only valid for 30 days and automatically expires after that, and includes 3GB of local data valid for 7 days from activation, plus a small amount of local voice and SMS credit. This passport-and-travel-documents requirement is specific to the tourist SIM; it is a different, stricter rule — covering residents registering an ongoing account, which asks for an employment pass — that does not apply to a visitor buying the Easi Tourist SIM at the airport.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks are there in Brunei?+
Three: DST, Progresif, and imagine, the mobile subsidiary of TelBru launched in December 2019.
Is there 5G in Brunei?+
Yes. All three operators launched 5G together on 22 June 2023, reporting at the time that 90% of populated areas had access to 5G-ready mobile service — a launch-day figure described then as a work in progress, with no updated 2026 figure found.
Can I buy a SIM as soon as I land in Brunei?+
Yes. DST sells a dedicated Easi Tourist SIM right at the airport arrivals hall, or at any DST branch. Bring your passport and travel documents; the SIM is valid for 30 days and includes 3GB of local data over 7 days from activation.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in Brunei?+
No. Brunei is outside the EU roaming zone, so the European price caps do not apply, and your operator bills Brunei data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check that rate with your provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Brunei eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Brunei, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Brunei eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
