Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso has three mobile operators, with market shares that regulator ARCEP itself publishes for the second quarter of 2024: Orange Burkina Faso (Orange BF) at 46.47%, Onatel/Moov Africa at 43.22% and Telecel Faso at 10.3%. That quarter, the country counted 27.36 million active SIM cards and 18.94 million mobile-internet subscriptions, split between Orange BF (10.00 million, 42.74%), Onatel/Moov Africa (7.30 million, 31.22%) and Telecel Faso (1.63 million, 6.98%).

No source from this research publishes a national coverage percentage for 4G, 3G or 5G. Burkina Faso does have a concrete, non-percentage coverage story instead: the 'Projet Zéro zone blanche'. A first phase, reported 23 May 2022, brought coverage via 183 antennas (each with a range of roughly 6 km) to about 300 'white zones' out of the 11,000 localities surveyed nationwide, through a public-private partnership in which Orange Burkina Faso funded more than 60% of the cost. A later phase, reported separately on 16 February 2026, targets 750 white zones in the Guiriko region — a different figure, from a different year and a different, regional scale, which should not simply be added to the earlier 300.
