Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in the Central African Republic
At the end of 2021, the Central African Republic had 1.86 million mobile subscribers, all still on 3G, with a penetration rate of 32% and internet penetration of 10.6% (around 616,000 users) — there was no 4G network in the country at that point.
That changed quickly: Orange Centrafrique obtained, as reported 11-12 November 2024, the country's first 4G licence, granted by the Ministry of Digital Economy, Posts and Telecommunications. Moov Africa followed with its own 4G licence, reported 14 January 2025. Telecel Centrafrique rolled out 4G as reported in May 2026, explicitly framed as catching up with Orange and Moov Africa. Three operators now offer 4G — Orange Centrafrique, Moov Africa and Telecel Centrafrique — but no coverage percentage has been published for any of the three, population or geographic.
Roaming in the Central African Republic without an eSIM
The Central African Republic is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — the country is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
SIM cards and registration in the Central African Republic
No source from this research — not regulator ARCA, not any of the three operators, not the press — mentions a SIM-registration rule in the Central African Republic, for residents or visitors. That is a genuine blank, not proof that no such rule exists. With the Ariya eSIM, that question is already settled before departure.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in the Central African Republic?+
Three operators: Orange Centrafrique, Moov Africa and Telecel Centrafrique. All three now offer 4G, a technology that did not exist at all at the end of 2021. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 4G and 5G in the Central African Republic?+
Yes for 4G, rolled out quickly: Orange Centrafrique got the first licence (reported November 2024), followed by Moov Africa in January 2025 and Telecel Centrafrique in May 2026. None of the three publishes a coverage percentage. Nothing was found on 5G.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in the Central African Republic?+
No. The country sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Do I need to register to buy a local SIM in the Central African Republic?+
No source from this research mentions a SIM-registration rule, for residents or visitors. That is a blank in current coverage, not proof that no rule exists.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Central African Republic eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Central African Republic, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Central African Republic eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
