Who is this Cyprus eSIM for?
With a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, the part of Cyprus under the Cypriot government's control behaves like home: the European roaming rules apply and your plan works at your domestic rate. For our core buyer, there is no coverage problem to solve in that part of the island. The three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European, not Cypriot: arriving on a SIM card from outside the EU, an unusually cheap or unlimited home plan that hits the fair-use data limit, or staying for months at a time for work or study. The area outside the Cypriot government's control is a separate case — see below.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Cyprus
In the part of Cyprus under the Cypriot government's control, 5G coverage ranks among the best in Europe. Basic 5G reached 100% of households in 2025, and that holds equally in sparsely populated areas — Cyprus has no city-countryside gap at all. The fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band also reaches 87.5%, both nationally and in rural areas, well above the EU average of 74.75%. Cyprus is among the small group of EU countries with near-complete 5G coverage.
Cyprus: where the EU rules do not apply
The European roaming rules apply in the part of Cyprus under the Cypriot government's control. According to the European Commission, EU legislation is suspended in the area where the Cypriot government does not exercise effective control, under Protocol 10 of the 2003 accession treaty. That affects the roaming rules too: anyone visiting that area should not simply assume a Belgian or Dutch plan will keep working there on the same terms, and would do well to check with their own operator first.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Cyprus?+
Yes, in the part of Cyprus under the control of the Cypriot government: Cyprus is an EU member state and 'Roam Like at Home' applies there as in any other member state. Keep in mind the fair-use data limit on a very cheap or unlimited plan, and the rules that apply if you stay for months at a stretch.
What if I visit the area outside the Cypriot government's control?+
That is a different situation. According to the European Commission, EU legislation is suspended there, under Protocol 10 of the 2003 accession treaty — which means the European roaming rules do not apply there either. If you're heading that way, check with your operator first about what that means for your plan.
Do I need to register for a Cypriot prepaid SIM?+
In July 2025, Cyprus's regulator announced that prepaid SIM cards would need to be linked to an identity, with a 10 November 2025 deadline after which unregistered cards would be deactivated — that deadline has since passed. What that means for an eSIM bought abroad before departure hasn't been specified by the regulator itself.
How good is the mobile network in Cyprus?+
Excellent: in the government-controlled area, 5G reached 100% of households in 2025, including in sparsely populated areas, and the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band reaches 87.5% there — well above the EU average of 74.75%.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Cyprus eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Cyprus, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Cyprus eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
