Arriving and activating in the DRC
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi at home. Most international flights, including direct and one-stop connections from Brussels, land at N'djili International Airport in Kinshasa. Only turn on data roaming once you've arrived, so you can skip hunting for a SIM shop and the mandatory registration on arrival.
Coverage in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and beyond
In Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, 4G coverage from the major networks is generally good. Outside the big cities and provincial capitals the network thins out: expect a solid connection in urban centres, and sometimes a weaker signal in rural areas, as with any local provider. Commercial 5G isn't available yet in the DRC — expect 4G.
Your own number and calling home
Because the eSIM only provides data, your Belgian or Dutch SIM card stays active for calls, texts and verification codes, so banking and logging in keep working as normal. To stay in touch with family back home, use the eSIM data for WhatsApp or Messenger calls, without foreign call charges.
Bridging a longer stay
For a family visit of several weeks, one plan may not be enough. Check the validity period on the plan page before booking, and if needed buy a second plan once the first is nearly used up — you can even do this while you're already in the DRC, as long as you have wifi for a moment.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?+
The eSIM connects to the major local networks (Vodacom Congo, Orange RDC, Airtel and Africell) for 4G internet in Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and other major cities.
Does the eSIM also work outside Kinshasa and Lubumbashi?+
In Kinshasa, Lubumbashi and other provincial capitals, 4G is generally available. In many rural areas coverage is thinner or absent, as with any local provider in the DRC.
Is buying a local SIM in the DRC difficult for visitors?+
SIM registration is mandatory and requires an ID such as a passport. With an eSIM you arrange your mobile data online in advance, so you skip that registration process at a local shop on arrival.
Does my Belgian or Dutch number stay reachable for WhatsApp and banking codes in the DRC?+
Yes. The Ariya eSIM only handles your mobile data in the DRC; your own SIM card stays active for calls, texts and app verification codes such as online banking. Your device then uses both cards at the same time (dual-SIM).
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Democratic Republic of the Congo eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Democratic Republic of the Congo, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Democratic Republic of the Congo eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
