Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Ecuador
Ecuador's mobile operators are Conecel (Claro), Otecel (Movistar) and the state-owned CNT EP. Movistar has been owned by Millicom, Tigo's parent company, since September 2025, but keeps its own brand: Otecel's management has said it will only consider rebranding to Tigo once service quality reaches the level Millicom wants. As of August 2025, Claro held 53% of active mobile lines and Movistar held 29%.
CNT EP activated Ecuador's first national 5G service in October 2025, starting in Quito and Guayaquil before extending to Cuenca, Ambato, Manta and Santo Domingo. By the end of 2025 the country had 233 5G radio base stations, against an initial internal estimate of just 30 — a figure presented by the Minister of Telecommunications, Roberto Kury, at a public accountability event. Claro and Movistar followed with 5G in multiple cities through 2026, with Claro naming Machala, Ambato, Riobamba, Latacunga and Durán among its expansion targets. CNT had aimed for national 5G coverage by around mid-2026, but no source confirms that target has actually been met.
Roaming in Ecuador without an eSIM
Ecuador is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Ecuador is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not cross the border with you: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, with none of the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. Ask what that tariff costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
What the 2038 concession renewal means for Ecuador
As part of the 2025 concession renegotiation, Claro and Movistar had their licences renewed through to 2038 — a thirteen-year extension from a period when renewals ran only quarterly. In exchange, the operators must connect 400 schools to the internet and roll out more than 600 new sites with 4G or higher technology, alongside commitments to improve service quality.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Ecuador?+
The operators are Conecel (Claro), Otecel (Movistar) and the state-owned CNT EP. Movistar has been owned by Millicom, Tigo's parent company, since September 2025, but keeps its own brand for now. The eSIM connects to a local network automatically — there is no operator for you to pick.
Is there 5G in Ecuador?+
Yes. CNT EP activated the country's first national 5G service in October 2025, and by the end of that year Ecuador already had 233 5G radio base stations against an initial estimate of just 30. Claro and Movistar followed with 5G in multiple cities. CNT aimed for national coverage by around mid-2026, but nothing confirms that goal was actually met.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Ecuador?+
No. Ecuador sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Ecuadorian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that tariff costs before you fly.
What changed with Ecuador's concession renewal?+
Claro and Movistar had their licences renewed in 2025 through to 2038, thirteen years longer than before. In exchange they must connect 400 schools to the internet and build more than 600 new sites with 4G or higher technology.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Ecuador eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Ecuador, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Ecuador eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
