Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in El Salvador
El Salvador currently has four operators, though that is changing. Besides Digicel, they are Movistar — operated by General International Telecom (GIT), not Telefónica directly — Claro (América Móvil) and Tigo (Millicom). Digicel, with a 13% share, announced in September 2026 that it was selling its El Salvador operations to GIT (Movistar) to focus on other Caribbean markets; regulatory approval was still pending at the time of that announcement, with a decision then expected in the first half of 2027. El Salvador had 11.2 million active mobile lines at the time.
Roaming in El Salvador without an eSIM
El Salvador is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and El Salvador is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not cross the border with you: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, with none of the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. Ask what that tariff costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
5G in El Salvador: a slow start, with no official percentage
Trade press described 5G progress in El Salvador as slow as of June 2025. A later measurement by the independent firm nPerf, cited in October 2026, named Tigo as the leader in both 4G and 5G coverage. Neither source gives a specific coverage percentage, and regulator SIGET has not published a figure of its own either.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in El Salvador?+
Movistar (operated by General International Telecom, GIT), Claro (América Móvil) and Tigo (Millicom) are the main operators. A fourth, Digicel, announced in September 2026 that it was selling its operations to GIT; that sale still needs approval.
Is El Salvador's mobile market changing?+
Yes. Digicel announced in September 2026 that it was selling its El Salvador operations to GIT (Movistar) to focus on other Caribbean markets. Regulatory approval was expected in the first half of 2027 at the time.
Is there 5G in El Salvador?+
Trade press called 5G rollout slow as of June 2025. A measurement by nPerf from October 2026 named Tigo as the leader in both 4G and 5G coverage, but there is no official percentage.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in El Salvador?+
No. El Salvador sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Salvadoran data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my El Salvador eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in El Salvador, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new El Salvador eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
