Mobile internet and 5G in Eswatini
Eswatini has two mobile operators — MTN Eswatini and Eswatini Mobile — regulated by ESCCOM, the Eswatini Communications Commission, under the Communications Commission Act 2013. A third licensee, the Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, provides fixed telecommunications only, not a consumer mobile service. ESCCOM's own sector-statistics documents are image-based files that don't yield readable text, so no current national 4G or 5G coverage percentage can be stated here.
5G is live from both mobile operators. MTN Eswatini is reported to have launched first, around August 2022. Eswatini Mobile followed on 28 March 2025, in Matsapha and Manzini specifically, with plans to expand further. Worth knowing: a dated report from September 2025 flags Samsung-device compatibility problems on Eswatini Mobile's 5G network, so it isn't a given that 5G 'just works' on every handset there.
SIM registration in Eswatini
Eswatini's 2016 Subscriber Registration Regulations, read directly from ESCCOM's own published text, state plainly that the registration requirement does not extend to subscribers of a foreign licensee, even while roaming on a local network — a traveller using their own home operator's SIM sits, by the regulation's own wording, entirely outside this registration requirement. A visitor who instead buys a local Eswatini SIM needs to provide a full name, an identity or passport number, an address in Eswatini, and the country where their passport was issued; no proxy registration is allowed, meaning the SIM stays legally tied to whoever registered it. 'Biometric Information' is a defined term in the regulation but is never actually required by its own registration provisions — don't expect a fingerprint or facial scan to be part of the process.
Roaming in Eswatini without an eSIM
Eswatini sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your Belgian or Dutch bundle's home rates don't apply here — your own operator's out-of-bundle roaming tariff takes over instead. Check that tariff before you go.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Eswatini?+
Two: MTN Eswatini and Eswatini Mobile, both regulated by ESCCOM, the Eswatini Communications Commission. The Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporation is a third licensee but offers fixed lines only, not mobile.
Is there 4G and 5G in Eswatini?+
5G is live from both operators — MTN since around August 2022, Eswatini Mobile since March 2025 in Matsapha and Manzini — though a September 2025 report flags Samsung-device compatibility issues on Eswatini Mobile's network. No current 4G or 5G coverage percentage is published by ESCCOM.
Do I need to register a SIM card in Eswatini?+
Only if you buy a local one. A traveller roaming on their own operator's SIM sits, by the regulation's own wording, entirely outside Eswatini's registration requirement. For a local SIM, you'll need your name, a passport or ID number, an Eswatini address and your passport's country of issue — no fingerprint or facial scan is asked for.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Eswatini?+
No. Eswatini is outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Eswatini eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Eswatini, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Eswatini eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
