Mobile networks in the Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands' regulator is Fjarskiftiseftirlitið, established under the Faroese Telecommunications Act No. 72 of 22 May 2015. Two mobile operators are present: Føroya Tele (brand name Faroese Telecom, also 'FT') and Nema. Nema's own history is winding: the company was originally called Kall, taken over by Vodafone in 2008 and sold as Vodafone Faroe Islands, later rebranded 'hey', before taking its current name in 2022.
The Faroe Islands and the EU: never a member, split commercially
The Faroe Islands have never been part of the EU, or its predecessor. The EU's own External Action Service is direct about it: the islands 'decided not to become a part of the EC when Denmark joined' in 1973, and under Article 355(5)(a) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, the treaties have simply never applied there since — not a Brexit-style withdrawal, but a deliberate choice never to join. Commercially, treatment varies by operator. KPN places the Faroes (as 'Faeröer') on its free EU-rate list, and Odido does the same under the name 'Faeröer Eilanden'. Proximus, by contrast, puts the islands in its paid daily 'Zone A' pass, and Orange Belgium covers them only through its broader, paid World Plus Pass. Telenet, BASE and Vodafone NL don't mention the Faroe Islands anywhere on their own pages — with those operators, the answer simply isn't there to find.
5G in the Faroe Islands: one shared network, two providers
The most unusual fact about mobile internet in the Faroe Islands isn't about coverage itself, but about how that coverage is built: Nema's own FAQ explains that its cooperation with Føroya Tele covers only the base stations — the RAN network — not the mobile network's core technology, so 'the providers will therefore offer the same coverage, while still competing on subscriptions, products and services', under an agreement that runs nine years with an option to extend. A joint Ericsson/Føroya Tele press release, dated 15 April 2024, separately confirms '100 percent population coverage' for 5G across all 18 islands, on non-standalone (NSA) architecture using Ericsson Cloud Core. In practice, that means whichever of the two Faroese networks your SIM or eSIM profile rides on, the 5G coverage itself is identical — though that agreement says nothing about 4G or the rest of the service.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in the Faroe Islands?+
It depends on your operator. The Faroe Islands have never been part of the EU — not through a Brexit-style exit, but because the islands themselves chose to stay out in 1973, when Denmark joined; EU treaties have simply never applied there since. Even so, KPN and Odido both place the Faroes (as 'Faeröer' and 'Faeröer Eilanden' respectively) on their free EU-rate list. Proximus puts the islands in its paid daily 'Zone A' pass instead, and Orange Belgium covers them only through its broader, paid World Plus Pass. Telenet, BASE and Vodafone NL don't mention the Faroe Islands anywhere on their own pages. Check your own operator before you travel.
Is there 5G in the Faroe Islands?+
Yes, and in a genuinely unusual way: the two operators share the same 5G radio network. Nema's own FAQ explains that the cooperation covers only the base stations — the RAN network — not the core technology, so both providers offer exactly the same coverage while still competing on subscriptions, products and services; the agreement runs for nine years, with an option to extend. A joint Ericsson/Føroya Tele press release, dated 15 April 2024, separately confirms '100 percent population coverage' for 5G across all 18 islands, on non-standalone (NSA) architecture. Whichever of the two Faroese networks your eSIM profile lands on, the 5G coverage itself is the same.
Which mobile networks exist in the Faroe Islands?+
Two: Føroya Tele (brand name Faroese Telecom, also 'FT') and Nema. Nema has a winding history: the company used to be called Kall, was taken over by Vodafone in 2008 and sold as Vodafone Faroe Islands, later rebranded 'hey', before taking its current name, Nema, in 2022. The regulator is Fjarskiftiseftirlitið, established under the Faroese Telecommunications Act No. 72 of 22 May 2015.
Are the Faroe Islands part of the European Union?+
No, and they never have been. The Faroe Islands themselves chose, in 1973, not to join the Community when Denmark did, and EU treaties have simply never applied there since — not a Brexit-style exit, but a deliberate choice never to enter in the first place. The islands hold extensive autonomy within the Kingdom of Denmark, and manage their relationship with the EU through three separate bilateral agreements on fisheries, trade in goods and scientific cooperation — roaming isn't among them.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Faroe Islands eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Faroe Islands, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Faroe Islands eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
