Who is this French Guiana eSIM for?

For a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, French Guiana counts as home territory under EU law: the department is a French overseas department and an outermost region of the European Union, sitting inside 'Roam Like at Home' on exactly the same legal footing as any other EU member state. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves, each on its own roaming page: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list French Guiana individually in their EU zone, alongside Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and Mayotte. For our core customer, there's no roaming problem to solve here. The three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European in nature: arriving on a non-EU/EEA SIM, which gets no 'Roam Like at Home' benefit and pays the home operator's full international rate; being on an exceptionally cheap or unlimited home plan that runs into the fair-use data limit; and staying for months at a time, where the four-month periodic-travel rule can apply. One nuance worth knowing: Orange and SFR Caraïbe (Outremer Telecom), two of the operators physically serving the department, hold mobile licences that are legally distinct from those covering mainland France — precisely the reason the Roaming Regulation itself cites for keeping French Guiana on the same retail rate as the rest of the internal market, not as an exception to it.

Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in French Guiana

Four operators serve French Guiana: Orange, SFR Caraïbe (the brand of Outremer Telecom/OMT), Digicel and Free Caraïbe. This is the only French overseas department measured where Orange doesn't lead outright on voice quality: in ARCEP's 2024 measurement campaign, Digicel and OMT tied on voice indicators, while Orange still held first place on mobile-internet-speed indicators — a different leaderboard from Martinique and Guadeloupe, where Orange dominates more broadly. French Guiana was the second department to launch commercial 5G, in summer 2023 — a year after Réunion (summer 2022) and two years ahead of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Mayotte (first half of 2025). For the share of active 4G SIM cards, French Guiana is grouped at the end of 2025 with Martinique and Guadeloupe into the Antilles-Guyane zone, roughly 75%; ARCEP separately notes that this share is growing in every French overseas department except French Guiana, where it stays flat — the only department named this way as not improving on this measure.

French Guiana's interior: a coverage story told honestly

The most concrete, honest story about French Guiana concerns its interior. In its own study dated 28 November 2019, ARCEP found that 4G antennas in several named interior communes — Apatou, Grand-Santi, Papaïchton and Maripasoula, all reached mainly by river — performed in practice comparably to what 3G allows. That's a 2019 finding, not reconfirmed this time by a newer ARCEP report. According to trade and local press (batisseurs-outremer.com, 14 May 2025), as part of a programme dated to 2025, 15 relay towers have since been installed or are being installed across 11 communes, including Camopi, Maripasoula, Papaïchton, Grand-Santi, Apatou, Saül, Saint-Élie, Régina, Mana, Montsinéry-Tonnegrande and Roura — the same interior communes ARCEP flagged in 2019, now the target of fresh infrastructure. This programme is not the same as the mobile coverage-obligation scheme France applies only to mainland France: ARCEP's own page on that mainland scheme explicitly limits its coverage obligation to mainland France, with overseas mobile frequency allocation named as its own, separate regulatory track. No overall geographic or population-based 4G or 5G coverage percentage was found for French Guiana this time — the only department for which that's true, and the biggest open question that remains.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in French Guiana?+

Yes. French Guiana is a French overseas department and, like Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and Mayotte, an outermost region of the European Union, which puts it inside 'Roam Like at Home'. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list French Guiana individually in their own EU roaming zone, so your plan works there at your domestic rate — no exception found at any of the seven operators checked.

Which mobile networks operate in French Guiana?+

Four, the same as Martinique and Guadeloupe: Orange, SFR Caraïbe/OMT, Digicel and Free Caraïbe. French Guiana is the only territory measured where Orange doesn't lead outright on voice quality: Digicel and OMT tie there, while Orange still holds first place on mobile-internet-speed indicators.

Is mobile coverage the same everywhere in French Guiana?+

No. In a 28 November 2019 study, ARCEP found that 4G antennas in several named interior communes — Apatou, Grand-Santi, Papaïchton and Maripasoula — performed in practice comparably to what 3G allows. That's a 2019 finding, not reconfirmed by a newer ARCEP report. According to trade press (batisseurs-outremer.com, 14 May 2025), 15 relay towers have since been installed or are being installed across 11 communes, including these same interior communes — a separate programme, not the same as the coverage-obligation scheme France applies only to mainland France.

How does 4G usage in French Guiana compare to the other French overseas departments?+

French Guiana was the second department to launch 5G, in summer 2023 — a year after Réunion and two years ahead of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Mayotte. For the share of active 4G SIM cards, French Guiana is grouped at the end of 2025 with Martinique and Guadeloupe into the Antilles-Guyane zone (roughly 75%), but ARCEP separately flags French Guiana as the one French overseas department where that share isn't growing, and is staying flat instead. No separate geographic coverage percentage was found for French Guiana this time — the biggest open question for this territory.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my French Guiana eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in French Guiana, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new French Guiana eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
