Mobile networks in French Polynesia

In French Polynesia, the public enterprise OPT is not an independent regulator but the owner of the mobile brand Vini itself (via subsidiary ONATi); separate oversight of market access and rates sits with the Autorité polynésienne de la concurrence, which, in an opinion dated 25 March 2026, sets mobile call-termination rates for 2026 and 2027 and names three entities there: ONATi, PMT and VITI. Two brands are independently confirmed: Vini (via ONATi, OPT's own brand, selling since 1995) and Vodafone Polynésie, which, per its own current sales conditions, runs on the 'PMT network'. Whether 'VITI' is a separate, still-selling consumer brand could not be confirmed independently of PMT — so this talks about Vini and Vodafone Polynésie, not four separate networks.

4G and 5G in French Polynesia

Vini's 4G network has run commercially since 2017 on Tahiti. On 5G, Vini itself announced a launch on 21 August 2025 that, per reporting, 'covers only certain densely populated urban zones', namely Papeete and Faaa, on non-standalone (NSA) architecture — eight years after its own 4G launch. Beyond those two towns, no 5G is confirmed, and no territory-wide 4G coverage percentage has been published by a regulator.

Your Belgian or Dutch bundle and the eSIM in French Polynesia

French Polynesia is an OCT, not EU territory, and the Belgian operators treat it that way: Proximus places 'Frans-Polynesië' in its 'Zone B', Orange Belgium lists it under its 'World Plus Pass'. For anyone who still wants a local SIM on arrival: Vodafone Polynésie's own sales conditions for its 'Travel SIM' (Article 2) require a valid passport at purchase, alongside a registration form. The card stays valid for 3 months, and once activated its credit expires after 15 days — exactly the kind of step a pre-bought eSIM skips, without handing over a passport at a counter in Tahiti.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in French Polynesia?+

No. French Polynesia is an OCT (overseas country or territory), not EU territory, and the Belgian operators treat it accordingly: Proximus places 'Frans-Polynesië' in its 'Zone B', Orange Belgium lists it under its 'World Plus Pass'. Your bundle does not work there at domestic or EU rates.

Is there 5G in French Polynesia?+

A little, and very locally. Vini, OPT's own mobile brand, announced a 5G launch on 21 August 2025 that covers only Papeete and Faaa, eight years after its own 2017 4G launch. Beyond those two towns, no 5G is confirmed.

Which mobile networks exist in French Polynesia?+

Two brands are independently confirmed: Vini, the public enterprise OPT's own brand (via subsidiary ONATi), and Vodafone Polynésie, which, per its own sales conditions, runs on the PMT ('Pacific Mobile Telecom') network. A March 2026 competition-authority opinion names a third term, 'VITI', but it could not be confirmed as a separate, currently-selling consumer brand distinct from PMT.

Do I need a passport for a local tourist SIM in French Polynesia?+

At Vodafone Polynésie, yes: its own sales conditions for the 'Travel SIM' require a valid passport at purchase. The card stays valid for 3 months, and once activated its credit lasts 15 days.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my French Polynesia eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in French Polynesia, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new French Polynesia eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
