Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Gabon
Gabon has two mobile operators: Airtel Gabon and Moov Africa Gabon Télécom, confirmed through press coverage of regulator ARCEP. On 13 October 2026, Airtel Gabon and Chinese equipment maker ZTE announced the commercial rollout of combined FDD, TDD and Massive MIMO technology to strengthen the existing 4G network — explicitly framed as preparation for an eventual move to 5G, not 5G itself.
5G has not launched in Gabon yet. On 16 December 2025, ARCEP and both operators met with the state, which set a two-year deadline for a progressive rollout. A list of future deployment cities was already named at that meeting, including Libreville, Akanda, Owendo, Franceville, Moanda, Lambaréné, Mouila, Tchibanga, Makokou, Koulamoutou, Lastourville, Port-Gentil, Gamba, Oyem and Bitam. This is a government target with a deadline, not a commercial launch — and for neither technology (4G or 5G) does ARCEP, either operator, or the press publish a coverage percentage, population or geographic.
Roaming in Gabon without an eSIM
Gabon is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — Gabon is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
SIM cards and registration in Gabon
No source gathered for this research — not ARCEP, not Airtel Gabon or Moov Africa Gabon Télécom, not the press — mentions a SIM-registration requirement in Gabon, for residents or visitors. That is a genuine blank in current coverage, not confirmation that no such rule exists. For anyone who would rather not test that in person, the Ariya eSIM is already active before departure, with no counter or form to deal with.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Gabon?+
Two operators: Airtel Gabon and Moov Africa Gabon Télécom, named in press coverage of regulator ARCEP. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 4G and 5G in Gabon?+
Airtel Gabon and ZTE announced a commercial rollout on 13 October 2026 to strengthen the existing 4G network. 5G has not launched: in December 2025 the state set a two-year deadline with ARCEP and both operators for a progressive rollout to a list of named cities. No 4G or 5G coverage percentage is published.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Gabon?+
No. Gabon sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills Gabonese data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Do I need to register to buy a local SIM in Gabon?+
No source from this research — regulator, operator or press — mentions a SIM-registration rule in Gabon, for residents or visitors. That is a blank in current coverage, not proof that no rule exists.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Gabon eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Gabon, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Gabon eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
