Arriving and activating in Ghana
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi at home. Most international flights land at Kotoka International Airport, about 10km from central Accra. Only turn on data roaming once you've arrived — that way you skip the search for a SIM shop and the required Ghana Card registration right away.
Coverage in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and beyond
4G is generally good in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale; MTN has the broadest 4G footprint outside the main urban areas. Further from the southern core, the network can fall back to 3G or 2G, as with any local provider.
Your own number and calling home
Because the eSIM only provides data, your Belgian or Dutch SIM card stays active for calls, texts and verification codes, so banking and logging in keep working as normal. To stay in touch with family back home, use the eSIM data for WhatsApp or Messenger calls, without foreign call charges.
Bridging a longer stay
For a family visit of several weeks, one plan may not be enough. Check the validity period on the plan page before booking, and if needed buy a second plan once the first is nearly used up — you can even do this while you're already in Ghana, as long as you have wifi for a moment.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Ghana?+
The eSIM connects to the major local networks (MTN, Telecel, AT Ghana and Glo) for 4G internet in Accra and other cities.
Does the eSIM also work outside Accra, for example in Kumasi or Tamale?+
4G is generally available in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale and other major towns; MTN has the broadest 4G footprint outside the main urban corridors. Further from the southern core, the network can fall back to 3G or 2G, as with any local provider in Ghana.
Is buying a local SIM in Ghana difficult for visitors?+
Registering a local SIM in Ghana is tied to the Ghana Card, a national ID that visitors don't have. That often makes buying a SIM on the spot slow and complicated for tourists — an eSIM sidesteps that step entirely.
Does my Belgian or Dutch number stay reachable for WhatsApp and banking codes in Ghana?+
Yes. The Ariya eSIM only handles your mobile data in Ghana; your own SIM card stays active for calls, texts and app verification codes such as online banking. Your device then uses both cards at the same time (dual-SIM).
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Ghana eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Ghana, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Ghana eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
