The mobile network in Greenland
Greenland has one mobile operator: Tusass, renamed in 2021 from TELE Greenland/Tele-Post, and wholly owned by Greenland's self-government, Naalakkersuisut. There is no second network. The regulator is Telestyrelsen, which describes itself as the body working on 'the efficient utilization of resources in society in the telecommunications and radio area', and which grants licences including for maritime, aviation and amateur-radio frequencies. Telestyrelsen's own 'about us' page names no operators and gives no coverage figures.
Greenland and the EU: the only territory that ever left on its own
Greenland hasn't been EU territory since 1 February 1985, when it became an 'overseas country or territory' (OCT), associated with the EU through the Kingdom of Denmark. That withdrawal ran via the so-called Greenland Treaty, signed 13 March 1984 in Brussels — making Greenland the only territory ever to leave the European Communities on its own initiative, even before Brexit. The commercial picture here is strikingly consistent: none of the Belgian or Dutch operators checked places Greenland in a free zone. Proximus puts it in its paid daily 'Zone B' pass, and Orange Belgium covers it only through its broader, paid World Plus Pass. KPN, Vodafone NL, Telenet, BASE and Odido don't mention Greenland anywhere on their own pages. Unlike Andorra or the Faroes, no operator breaks from the pattern here — for everyone, Greenland is simply foreign territory.
5G in ten towns, and Tusass's own tourist eSIM
Tusass states on its own site that 5G is available today in ten towns: Nuuk, Maniitsoq, Narsaq, Qaqortoq, Paamiut, Nanortalik, Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat, Ilulissat and Sisimiut; 'satellite towns and settlements' are explicitly excluded from that list. The rollout traces back to a joint Tusass/Ericsson announcement on 30 September 2022, with Sisimiut, Maniitsoq and Narsaq as the first towns, on non-standalone (NSA) Fixed Wireless Access architecture; Tusass's CEO, Kristian Reinert Davidsen, called mobile connections 'the only line of contact' for many Greenlandic families at the time. For 4G, the only figure found is 92% population coverage dated November 2018 — eight years old, so not to be read as current. For the trip itself, Tusass sells its own 'Hello Greenland' product, as an eSIM arranged ahead of time or a physical card picked up at Tusass stores in Nuuk, Sisimiut and Ilulissat; its own product page states no ID requirement, but doesn't answer the question either way.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in Greenland?+
No, at none of the operators checked. Greenland has been an EU 'overseas country or territory' (OCT) since 1 February 1985 — the only territory ever to withdraw itself from the European Communities, via the Greenland Treaty, even before Brexit. Proximus places Greenland in its paid daily 'Zone B' pass, and Orange Belgium covers it only through its broader, paid World Plus Pass. KPN, Vodafone NL, Telenet, BASE and Odido don't mention Greenland anywhere on their own pages. So expect your bundle not to work at domestic or EU rates there, with any of these operators.
Is there 5G in Greenland?+
Yes, but very narrowly. Tusass, the sole mobile operator, states on its own site that 5G is available today in ten towns: Nuuk, Maniitsoq, Narsaq, Qaqortoq, Paamiut, Nanortalik, Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat, Ilulissat and Sisimiut. The rollout traces back to a joint Tusass/Ericsson announcement on 30 September 2022, with Sisimiut, Maniitsoq and Narsaq as the first towns, on non-standalone (NSA) Fixed Wireless Access architecture. Tusass itself says 'satellite towns and settlements' fall outside this list — so this is coverage in ten named towns, not a national or population percentage.
Who runs the mobile network in Greenland?+
One company: Tusass, renamed in 2021 from TELE Greenland/Tele-Post, and wholly owned by Greenland's own self-government, Naalakkersuisut. There's no second mobile network. The regulator is Telestyrelsen, which describes itself as working on 'the efficient utilization of resources in society in the telecommunications and radio area', and grants licences including for maritime, aviation and amateur-radio frequencies.
Can I also buy a tourist SIM or eSIM locally in Greenland?+
Yes. Tusass sells its own 'Hello Greenland' tourist product, as an eSIM you can arrange ahead of time or as a physical card picked up at Tusass stores in Nuuk, Sisimiut and Ilulissat. That product page doesn't state any ID requirement — which doesn't automatically mean none applies, since the page simply doesn't address the question. So don't treat either answer as confirmed.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Greenland eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Greenland, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Greenland eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
