Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Guinea
Guinea has a large, fast-growing mobile market dominated by one player. Press coverage of regulator ARPT's figures (reported July 2026, as at end June 2025) puts mobile subscribers at 12.8 million, a penetration of 89.1%; internet subscriptions stand at 8.3 million, about 58% of the population. Orange Guinée holds 76.2% of the market, well ahead of the operator formerly known as MTN Guinée and of Cellcom.
Worth flagging is a recent change of ownership: at the end of 2024, MTN Group sold its 75% stake in Areeba Guinée (MTN Guinée's holding company) to the Guinean State, after years of falling market share against Orange's rise. Guinean press now refers to the operator as 'MTN (Areeba)', reflecting that transition — so we do not write 'MTN Guinée' unqualified, as an unchanged going concern. For 4G and 5G, ARPT publishes no national coverage percentage; the same sources reported that about 6% of Guinea's neighbourhoods and districts still lacked adequate mobile coverage in mid-2025. No confirmed commercial 5G launch was found: state-owned Guinée Télécoms is reported to be planning both 4G and 5G, with no confirmed launch date.
Roaming in Guinea without an eSIM
Guinea is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — Guinea is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
Buying a local SIM in Guinea
ARPT's identification decision is clear on what each buyer must show. For Guinean nationals, a national ID card, a passport or a voter card is enough. For non-nationals — the category a Belgian or Dutch visitor falls into — a passport or a consular card must be presented. A subscriber may register at most three SIM cards per identity document per operator, and an operator that sells a pre-activated card risks a steep fine.
Since 2026 a digital layer has been added on top: a national telecom-identity certification platform requires prior identity validation before a SIM card can be activated, reactivated or replaced. Operators had six months to integrate with it, with full subscriber recertification required within 24 months. An operator that sells a pre-activated card anyway risks a fine of 10 million Guinean francs per card — a strong incentive to follow the rules. Conakry's airport, Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport, is named here only as a landmark: no source confirms that Orange, Areeba or Cellcom themselves sell a tourist SIM there. In short: nationality decides which document counts, a visitor shows a passport or consular card, and since 2026 every activation runs through that electronic verification platform — all steps the Ariya eSIM skips entirely, since it is already active before you even take off.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Guinea?+
Orange Guinée, Cellcom, and the operator formerly known as MTN Guinée (now state-owned, trading as Areeba since the Guinean State bought MTN's 75% stake on 30 December 2024). Orange dominates with a 76.2% market share.
Is there 4G and 5G in Guinea?+
ARPT publishes no national 4G/5G coverage percentage. What is known: about 6% of Guinea's neighbourhoods and districts still lacked adequate mobile coverage in mid-2025, per regulator-linked data reported in July 2026. No confirmed commercial 5G launch was found; state-owned Guinée Télécoms is reported to be planning both 4G and 5G, with no confirmed launch date.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Guinea?+
No. Guinea sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills Guinean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
What do I need to buy a local SIM in Guinea?+
Under ARPT's decision, non-nationals (which includes a Belgian or Dutch visitor) must present a passport or a consular card, with a maximum of three SIM cards per identity document per operator; since 2026, every activation runs through a national electronic identity-validation platform.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Guinea eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Guinea, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Guinea eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
