Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Honduras
The market is led by Tigo (Millicom), with more than 65% market share, followed by Claro (América Móvil) with 34%. State-owned Hondutel holds only a marginal share.
Roaming in Honduras without an eSIM
Honduras is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Honduras is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not cross the border with you: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, with none of the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. Ask what that tariff costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
Why coverage lags in Honduras: thirteen years without new spectrum
According to a GSMA report, Honduras's total mobile coverage stood at 75% in 2023, against a Latin American regional average of 94%. GSMA attributes the gap to a spectrum shortage: Honduras had only 250 MHz of spectrum assigned at the time, half the regional average of around 500 MHz, and no new spectrum had been assigned since an AWS auction in 2013 — a thirteen-year freeze. GSMA says that shortage delayed 4G rollout by about a year and nearly ten percentage points, pushing back connectivity for almost a million people.
In July 2026, regulator CONATEL finally opened an auction for three national blocks of 20 MHz each in the 1700/2100 MHz band, open to the three existing operators. Winners would have to deliver, within fourteen months, 200 mobile voice lines with 20GB a month and 300 fixed-wireless connections of at least 10 Mbps with 50GB a month, with a compliance deadline of December 2027. But the auction, held around 26 August 2026, failed: only one operator submitted documentation on time, while the rules required at least two bidders. CONATEL explained it this way: 'no se configuró el entorno competitivo exigido por las Bases del Concurso' — the competitive environment required by the auction rules did not come together. The regulator said it would call a new auction as soon as possible ('una nueva convocatoria a la mayor brevedad posible'). Honduras had a mobile penetration rate of 69.5% (6.95 million active lines) at the time, among the lowest in Latin America.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Honduras?+
Tigo (Millicom) leads the market with more than 65%, followed by Claro (América Móvil) with 34%. State-owned Hondutel holds only a marginal share.
How good is mobile coverage in Honduras?+
According to GSMA, total mobile coverage stood at 75% in 2023, against a Latin American regional average of 94% — a gap GSMA attributes to thirteen years without new spectrum being assigned.
Is there 5G in Honduras?+
No, nothing confirms that there is. An auction meant to open the door to more 4G and 5G capacity failed in August 2026 for lack of a second bidder; CONATEL said it would hold a new auction as soon as possible.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Honduras?+
No. Honduras sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Honduran data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Honduras eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Honduras, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Honduras eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
