Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in India
India has four mobile networks: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and the state-run BSNL. The 5G rollout there moved unusually fast. As of early 2025 the picture was this: 5G had been deployed across all states and union territories in October 2024, it was available in 779 of 783 districts, and over 460,000 5G base transceiver stations were in place. Jio built its network standalone, Airtel non-standalone; Vodafone Idea was still in limited trials across 17 telecom circles on 3.3 GHz and 26 GHz, and BSNL was targeting a commercial launch in 2025.
Those numbers describe the position in early 2025 and were already moving then — read them as a snapshot, not as today's figure. The direction is clear enough: 5G in India is no longer a big-city exception but something you meet across the large majority of districts, with 4G taking over where the network does not quite reach.
Roaming in India without an eSIM
India falls outside the European roaming arrangement. 'Roam Like at Home' covers the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine, and India is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch plan therefore does not travel with you: your operator bills Indian data at its own out-of-bundle rate, and the European price caps that apply inside the zone do nothing here. The European Commission says as much itself: roaming outside the EU and EEA can be expensive, and you are better off asking your provider what it costs before you leave. A trip to India is rarely a few days long, and that is exactly where the difference lands.
Scale and rural reach: how far does mobile internet go in India?
By its own figures, India is the world's second-largest telecom market. The Economic Survey 2025 counted over 1.18 billion telephone subscribers and 941 million broadband users as of 31 October 2024. A market that size is not built in the cities alone, and that is where it gets interesting: a programme is extending 4G to 24,680 villages that previously had no connection, while 6,279 villages have been upgraded from 2G or 3G to 4G. These are not coverage percentages but construction numbers — and they tell you two things at once: the rural gaps were real, and they are actively being closed.
Frequently asked questions
Is there 5G in India?+
Yes, and the rollout moved fast. As of early 2025, 5G had been deployed across every state and union territory — completed in October 2024 — and was available in 779 of 783 districts, with over 460,000 5G base transceiver stations in the country. Those figures describe the position in early 2025 and have only moved on since.
Which mobile networks does India have?+
Four: Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and the state-run BSNL. Jio runs its 5G standalone, Airtel non-standalone. In early 2025 Vodafone Idea was still in limited trials across 17 telecom circles on 3.3 GHz and 26 GHz, and BSNL was targeting a commercial 5G launch that year.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in India?+
Not at your domestic rate. India lies outside 'Roam Like at Home', which applies only to the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. Your operator bills Indian data at its own out-of-bundle rate, without the European price caps. The European Commission advises checking that rate before you travel.
Is there mobile internet outside India's cities?+
Increasingly, and deliberately so. A programme is extending 4G to 24,680 villages that previously had no connection, while 6,279 villages have been upgraded from 2G or 3G to 4G. That a build of that size is needed tells you how real the gaps were. Save your maps offline before a long bus or train journey.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my India eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in India, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new India eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
