Who is this Italy eSIM for?
Italy sits inside the European roaming area, so travellers with a Belgian or Dutch SIM card usually need nothing extra. This eSIM is for those outside that arrangement: travellers on a non-EU SIM card — from Morocco, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada — who are not covered by the European rules and pay their home operator's full international rate. There is a local hurdle on top of that: buying an Italian prepaid SIM means showing an identity document in store, while an eSIM is arranged online before you travel.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Italy
According to the European Commission, Italy has one of the strongest mobile networks in the Union. In 2025, 5G reached 99.82% of households, above the EU average of 96.79%, and 99.38% in sparsely populated areas. Capacity is the more striking number: 5G on the 3.4–3.8 GHz band covers 98.37% of households and 94.07% in sparsely populated areas, against an EU average of 33.71%. Italy and the Netherlands are the only two member states above 98% on that band. The three networks TIM, Vodafone and Wind Tre continued their 5G rollout through 2025.
Your Belgian or Dutch plan in Italy
Italy is an EU member state, so 'Roam Like at Home' applies in full: you call, text and browse on your own plan at your domestic rate. Two exceptions are worth knowing.
On a very cheap or unlimited plan, your operator may apply a fair-use limit to data. That limit is tied to what you pay — unlimited at home does not mean unlimited on the road — and your operator has to tell you about it in advance and alert you once you reach it. The rules also protect periodic travel rather than living abroad: only if, over a period of at least four months, you both spend more time abroad than at home and use more data abroad than domestically may your operator apply a surcharge — after a warning and at least two weeks to change that pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Italy?+
Yes. Italy is an EU member state, so the European roaming rules apply in full: you use your own plan at your domestic rate. Just keep the fair-use data limit in mind — it is tied to what you pay each month — along with the rules on long stays.
Is there 5G in Italy?+
Yes, almost everywhere. According to the European Commission, 5G reached 99.82% of Italian households in 2025 against an EU average of 96.79%, and 99.38% in sparsely populated areas. On the 3.4–3.8 GHz band, the one that delivers speed and capacity, Italy reaches 98.37% — the highest figure in the EU alongside the Netherlands.
Which networks does the eSIM use in Italy?+
Italy has three mobile networks: TIM, Vodafone and Wind Tre. The eSIM connects to those local networks for 4G/5G internet in cities such as Roma, Milano and Napoli and across the rest of the country.
Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in Italy?+
For a local prepaid SIM, yes. Italy is among the majority of European countries where the seller registers your details, and you show an identity document in store for that. An eSIM is bought and installed online before you leave, without that step on arrival.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Italy eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Italy, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Italy eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
