Who is this Luxembourg eSIM for?
With a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Luxembourg behaves like home: the European roaming rules apply and your plan works at your domestic rate. For our core buyer, there is no coverage problem to solve here. The three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European, not Luxembourgish: arriving on a SIM card from outside the EU, an unusually cheap or unlimited home plan that hits the fair-use data limit, or staying for months at a time for work or study.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Luxembourg
Luxembourg has all but finished rolling out basic 5G: in 2025 it reached 99.9% of households and 98.9% of sparsely populated areas, both above the EU averages of 96.79% and 88.88%. Nationally, the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band also reaches 77.6%, just above the EU average of 74.75%, but that falls to 25.7% in rural areas — below the EU average of 33.71%. The European Commission itself names this rural mid-band coverage as one of Luxembourg's main points to address.
Your Belgian or Dutch plan in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is in the EU, so 'Roam Like at Home' applies: your plan works at your domestic rate. That mechanism is exactly why someone living in Belgium, France or Germany and commuting daily to Luxembourg for work needs no special product for that commute: the European rules tie your rate to where you live or have a stable link, not to the border you cross every day.
Two things still matter. On a very cheap or unlimited plan, your operator may cap what you use abroad, in proportion to what you pay each month, and must tell you in advance and alert you once you reach that limit. And over a stay of at least four months, they may check whether you spend more time outside your own country than in it and use more abroad than domestically — only if both are true, and after a warning with at least two weeks to adjust, may a surcharge be applied.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Luxembourg?+
Yes. Luxembourg is an EU member state, so your plan simply works there at your domestic rate. Keep in mind the fair-use data limit on a very cheap or unlimited plan, and the rules that apply if you stay for months at a stretch.
Do I need to register for a Luxembourg prepaid SIM?+
According to an independent inventory of SIM registration across Europe, Luxembourg is among the countries that require it, though the exact document isn't publicly documented. It makes no difference for our eSIM either way: that's bought and installed online before departure.
Is 5G any good in Luxembourg?+
Excellent for basic coverage: in 2025, 5G reached 99.9% of households and 98.9% of sparsely populated areas, both above the EU average. The one real gap is on the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band in rural areas, at 25.7% against an EU average of 33.71% — a point the European Commission itself names as Luxembourg's main challenge.
I work in Luxembourg every day but live in Belgium, France or Germany — does my plan work too?+
Yes. The European roaming rules are tied to where you live or have a stable, regular link, not to where you happen to be — so your Belgian, French or German plan simply works the moment you cross into Luxembourg for the working day, just as at any other EU border.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Luxembourg eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Luxembourg, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Luxembourg eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
