Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Malawi
Malawi's mobile market runs on two live operators — TNM (Telekom Networks Malawi) and Airtel Malawi — regulated by MACRA, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, under the Communications Act of 2016. A third licence, awarded to Malcel in August 2022, had still not resulted in a launch as of a February 2026 report citing a 'forex crunch' — don't count on Malcel as a live option. Malawi's coverage figures come from a GSMA report presented 20 August 2026 at the Digital Africa Summit in Lilongwe: national 4G population coverage stood at 87% (2G 90%, 3G 92%), rising to 100% in urban areas but only 71% in rural ones. The same report traced a striking improvement over time — the share of the population with no network coverage at all fell from 60% in 2015 to just 8% by 2025.
The more interesting number, though, is a usage gap rather than a coverage one: the same GSMA report found that only 12% of Malawians actually use mobile internet, a figure that has barely moved in a decade despite the much wider network reach above — being 'covered' and being actually online are very different things in Malawi. For comparison, the same report notes: Uganda reaches 98% rural 4G coverage and Senegal 97%, against Malawi's 87%. 5G itself is live from both TNM and Airtel but still narrow: Airtel added 57 new 5G sites across ten districts in November 2025 alongside a nationwide 4G-voice (VoLTE) rollout, and TNM has claimed a 5G launch without giving a city list or coverage figure. Unlike Namibia, Starlink is a legal, operating option in Malawi.
SIM registration in Malawi
Malawi has required SIM registration since 2018, built around the national identity card issued by the National Registration Bureau. MACRA relaunched a registration drive in March 2025 specifically to fight money-related cybercrime, after reports of people registering multiple SIMs under one identity, including some using deceased people's documents. No source sets out a specific procedure for a foreign visitor presenting a passport instead of a Malawian ID — a working eSIM already active before you land avoids that question entirely.
Roaming in Malawi without an eSIM
Malawi sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your Belgian or Dutch bundle doesn't carry over here — your own operator's out-of-bundle roaming tariff applies instead. Check that tariff before you travel.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Malawi?+
TNM and Airtel Malawi are live; a third licensee, Malcel, had still not launched as of early 2026. All three are regulated by MACRA, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority.
Is there 4G and 5G in Malawi?+
A GSMA report presented in August 2026 put national 4G coverage at 87% (100% urban, 71% rural). 5G is live from both TNM and Airtel but still limited to named sites and districts. Starlink is also a legal, operating option in Malawi.
Why do people talk about a mobile 'usage gap' in Malawi?+
Because despite that 87% 4G coverage, the same GSMA report found only 12% of Malawians actually use mobile internet — a usage figure, not a coverage one, and one that has barely moved in a decade.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Malawi?+
No. Malawi is outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Malawi eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Malawi, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Malawi eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
