Who is this Malta eSIM for?
With a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Malta behaves like home: the European roaming rules apply and your plan works at your domestic rate. For our core buyer, there is no coverage problem to solve here — the three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European, not Maltese: arriving on a SIM card from outside the EU, an unusually cheap or unlimited home plan that hits the fair-use data limit, or staying for months at a time for work or study.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Malta
Malta hit its 5G target back in 2022: basic 5G has covered 100% of households there since 2022. But on the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band, Malta sits at the opposite end of the EU ranking — with 40.0% coverage, far below the EU average of 74.75%, and no growth at all last year. That makes Malta one of the two lowest mid-band figures in the entire European Union. The network itself is still being built out by the three mobile operators Epic, GO and Melita, who are moving from 3G to 4G and 5G while keeping 2G running for now as a safety net.
Your Belgian or Dutch plan in Malta
Malta is in the EU, so 'Roam Like at Home' applies: your plan works at your domestic rate.
Two things still matter. On a very cheap or unlimited plan, your operator may cap what you use abroad, in proportion to what you pay each month, and must tell you in advance and alert you once you reach that limit. And over a stay of at least four months, they may check whether you spend more time outside your own country than in it and use more abroad than domestically — only if both are true, and after a warning with at least two weeks to adjust, may a surcharge be applied.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Malta?+
Yes. Malta is an EU member state, so your plan simply works there at your domestic rate. Keep in mind the fair-use data limit on a very cheap or unlimited plan, and the rules that apply if you stay for months at a stretch.
Is 5G any good in Malta?+
Basic 5G has been complete since 2022 — Malta hit its national 100% coverage target that same year. But the fast 3.4–3.8 GHz band is stuck at 40.0%, far below the EU average of 74.75%, and saw no growth at all last year — one of the two lowest figures in the entire European Union on that measure, alongside Romania.
Which mobile operators are there in Malta?+
Three: Epic, GO and Melita, named in Malta's own report to the European Commission. Together they are continuing the rollout of 4G and 5G, while 3G is being switched off in stages and 2G is kept running for now as a safety net.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Malta eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Malta, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Malta eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
