Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Mauritania
Mauritania has three operators: Mattel S.A. (the Mauritanian subsidiary of Tunisie Télécom), Mauritel S.A. and Chinguitel S.A., confirmed on regulator ARE's own site. ARE itself stays active: in early October 2026 it reported a quality-of-service control mission covering voice and data at the three operators, run between 13 February and 22 March 2026, after an earlier deadline given to meet quality commitments had expired.
Mauritania is building a notably fast 5G story: on 29 November 2023, the country's 63rd independence anniversary, Mattel ran the country's first 5G tests. An October 2024 network milestone with technology partner Huawei followed. On 5 April 2026, press reports named four candidates competing for Mauritania's 5G licences. None of these sources gives a coverage percentage, population or geographic — treat this as an infrastructure-momentum story (test to licence process), not a coverage figure. No current national coverage percentage for 4G, 3G or 2G is published: the only numerical ARE document found, a dashboard PDF, is dated 31 December 2013 and is too stale to use.
Roaming in Mauritania without an eSIM
Mauritania is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — Mauritania is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
SIM cards and registration in Mauritania
Mauritania has a named, dated SIM-identification law: Loi 2024-011, published 15 February 2024, on the identification of subscribers to electronic communications services. ARE itself names the law by title and date, but the PDF is a scanned document with no readable text layer — its content, including any visitor-specific provisions, could not be read this time. No procedure is confirmed for a visitor buying a first SIM card. For anyone who would rather skip that question, the Ariya eSIM is already active before departure.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Mauritania?+
Three operators: Mattel S.A. (the Mauritanian subsidiary of Tunisie Télécom), Mauritel S.A. and Chinguitel S.A., confirmed on regulator ARE's own site. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 4G and 5G in Mauritania?+
Mauritania is on a dated 5G path: first tests by Mattel on 29 November 2023, a network milestone with Huawei in October 2024, then four candidates reported by the press in April 2026 for the 5G licences. No source gives a coverage percentage for 4G or 5G; the only numerical ARE document on mobile coverage dates from 2013 and is too stale to use.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Mauritania?+
No. Mauritania sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills Mauritanian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Do I need to register to buy a local SIM in Mauritania?+
Mauritania has a named SIM-identification law (Loi 2024-011, February 2024), but the document is a scanned file whose content could not be read this time. No procedure is confirmed for a visitor buying a first SIM card.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Mauritania eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Mauritania, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Mauritania eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
