Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Mauritius
Three operators serve Mauritius's mobile market: Mauritius Telecom (consumer brand my.t, through its mobile arm Cellplus), Emtel, and Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Ltd, trading as CHiLi. The regulator is ICTA (Information and Communication Technologies Authority).
5G is commercially live from multiple operators — my.t Mobile launched first in July 2021, Emtel followed in August 2023 — with operators describing their networks as reaching most or all of the island, though ICTA itself does not publish a single coverage figure to confirm. A firmer, regulator-stated date: Mauritius will retire 3G entirely by 2028 at the latest, a decision the government endorsed on 3 October 2025 — ICTA is already urging the public to move away from devices that only support 3G.
Roaming in Mauritius without an eSIM
Mauritius is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — Mauritius is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
Buying a SIM as a tourist in Mauritius
Mauritius has the clearest current SIM-registration rule in the region. Under the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023, a tourist registering a SIM in person needs only a copy of their passport's personal-details page and proof of address in Mauritius — typically a hotel or accommodation booking in practice — with no visa copy required. That's a change from the previous 2021 rule, which did require a visa copy and capped a tourist's SIM at three months. The 2023 regulation also lets a licensed hotel or tourism operator buy a SIM on a guest's behalf, so arranging one on arrival is explicitly anticipated by the law. One detail that does apply: the SIM is deactivated the day after a tourist's visa or entry permit expires or is cancelled.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Mauritius?+
Three: Mauritius Telecom (consumer brand my.t), Emtel, and Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Ltd, trading as CHiLi. The regulator is ICTA (Information and Communication Technologies Authority).
Is there 4G and 5G in Mauritius?+
5G has been commercially live since 2021 (my.t Mobile) and 2023 (Emtel), with operators describing coverage as reaching most or all of the island — though ICTA doesn't publish a single coverage percentage to confirm that. A firmer fact: 3G will be fully retired by 2028 at the latest, a decision the government endorsed in October 2025.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Mauritius?+
No. Mauritius sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills local data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
What do I need to buy a SIM as a tourist in Mauritius?+
Under the current 2023 regulation, a tourist needs only a copy of their passport's personal-details page and proof of address in Mauritius — no visa copy, unlike the superseded 2021 rule. A licensed hotel can also arrange a SIM on a guest's behalf.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Mauritius eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Mauritius, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Mauritius eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
