Who is this Mayotte eSIM for?

For a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Mayotte counts as home territory under EU law: the department is a French overseas department and an outermost region of the European Union — since 2014, later than Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and French Guiana, but with no caveat found about that later date among the seven operators checked. Mayotte sits inside 'Roam Like at Home' on exactly the same legal footing as any other EU member state. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves, each on its own roaming page: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list Mayotte individually in their EU zone, alongside Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and French Guiana. For our core customer, there's no roaming problem to solve here. The three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European in nature: arriving on a non-EU/EEA SIM, which gets no 'Roam Like at Home' benefit and pays the home operator's full international rate; being on an exceptionally cheap or unlimited home plan that runs into the fair-use data limit; and staying for months at a time, where the four-month periodic-travel rule can apply.

Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Mayotte

Four operators serve Mayotte: SFR (branded SRR) and Orange, named directly by ARCEP as the two quality-of-service leaders, plus Only (the brand of Telco OI, formerly Numericable Outremer) and Maoré Mobile, named as the other two by trade press. ARCEP explicitly names Mayotte as the weakest of the seven overseas territories measured in its 2024 campaign — a comparison among the overseas territories measured, not a judgement about France or Europe as a whole — even though SRR and Orange tie with each other within Mayotte on both voice/SMS and mobile internet indicators. 5G launched in Mayotte in the first half of 2025, in the same wave as Martinique and Guadeloupe, roughly three years after Réunion (summer 2022). Notably, with 85% of active SIM cards on 4G at the end of 2025, Mayotte has the second-highest adoption rate of any department measured, just behind Réunion (86%) and well above the Antilles-Guyane zone (roughly 75%) — a real contrast with the weaker quality score, presented here as two separate, independently verified facts rather than flattened into one story.

Cyclone Chido and the network in Mayotte

One concrete, dated infrastructure fact with mobile consequences: Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte in December 2024 and, according to ARCEP's own 2025 overseas observatory, severely damaged the copper network, destroying part of the aerial copper network. Customers migrated toward 4G/5G boxes (fixed-wireless connections) and satellite offers as replacements for fixed copper lines; fibre deployment in Mayotte itself only began in December 2025. This is one reason mobile — including 4G/5G fixed-wireless — carries a larger share of connectivity in Mayotte than in the other French overseas departments. It's also exactly why the high 4G adoption figure mentioned above (85%) shouldn't be read as a simple contradiction of ARCEP's quality finding: both facts are independently verified and describe different things.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Mayotte?+

Yes. Mayotte is a French overseas department and, like Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and French Guiana, an outermost region of the European Union, which puts it inside 'Roam Like at Home' — even though Mayotte only became an outermost region in 2014, later than the other four. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list Mayotte individually in their own EU roaming zone, with no caveat found for that later date — no exception found at any of the seven operators checked.

Which mobile networks operate in Mayotte?+

Four: SFR (branded SRR) and Orange are named directly by ARCEP as the two quality-of-service leaders, even tying with each other within Mayotte on both voice/SMS and mobile internet indicators. Only (the brand of Telco OI, formerly Numericable Outremer) and Maoré Mobile are named as the other two operators by trade press, without direct confirmation from ARCEP.

Is mobile coverage in Mayotte good or bad?+

It depends which figure you look at — and both are real. ARCEP itself names Mayotte as the weakest of the seven overseas territories measured in its 2024 campaign, even though SRR and Orange tie with each other on most indicators within Mayotte. At the same time, with 85% of active SIM cards on 4G at the end of 2025, Mayotte has the second-highest adoption rate of any French overseas department measured, just behind Réunion (86%) and well above the Antilles-Guyane zone (roughly 75%). These are two separate, independently verified facts — one about network experience, the other about SIM usage — and they aren't collapsed into a single story here.

What did Cyclone Chido do to the network in Mayotte?+

According to ARCEP's own 2025 overseas observatory, Cyclone Chido, which struck Mayotte in December 2024, severely damaged the copper network, destroying part of the aerial copper network, which drove customers toward 4G/5G boxes (fixed-wireless connections) and satellite offers as replacements for fixed copper lines. Fibre deployment in Mayotte itself only began in December 2025. This is one reason mobile — including 4G/5G fixed-wireless — carries a larger share of connectivity in Mayotte than in the other French overseas departments.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Mayotte eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Mayotte, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Mayotte eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
