Who is this Moldova eSIM for?
With a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Moldova has been, since 1 January 2026, effectively domestic: the European Commission confirms the roaming rules are 'now fully operational for Moldova', and Moldova's government states that European travellers there can call, text and use mobile internet 'without additional roaming charges', at the same speed and quality as at home. Your plan therefore works there at your domestic rate. This eSIM is for travellers arriving from outside the EU or EEA who would otherwise pay their own operator's full international rate, for those on a very cheap or unlimited plan who hit the fair-use data limit, and for anyone staying in Moldova for months at a time — for that last group, an operator may check usage over at least four months before applying a surcharge, and only after a warning that gives at least two weeks to adjust.
Mobile networks and 5G in Moldova
Moldova has three mobile operators: Orange Moldova, Moldcell, and Moldtelecom, which operates under the brand 'Unité'. In early 2025, regulator ANRCETI granted all three new spectrum licences, valid for 25 years, in the 700 MHz, 1500 MHz and 3600 MHz bands. On scale, the country counted 4.24 million cellular connections at the start of 2024, equating, per GSMA, to a penetration of 125.8% — more active lines than inhabitants.
5G exists in Moldova, but still at trial stage. Orange Moldova launched a 5G trial in June 2024 with speeds up to 2 Gbps at select locations in Chișinău; Moldcell has been partnering with Ericsson since May 2024 on its own 5G track. No commercial, nationwide coverage figure has been published for either, so we quote none — 5G in Moldova today is something to look forward to, not yet a finished service.
SIM card registration in Moldova: not yet law
A notably honest fact: as of this article's research date, Moldova has no mandatory SIM registration in force. The Interior Ministry (MAI) is working on a draft law, though. Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin stated that 'the draft was currently being developed, after which it would be registered in parliament', and that she wants the initiative to move through parliament 'in the near future' — without naming a specific date. The draft went to public consultation on 3 February 2026 via the government portal particip.gov.md, with that consultation closing on 16 February 2026. It would require an ID card or passport when buying a SIM card, with data recorded by operators, framed around combating fraud, scams and cybercrime. The Minister mentioned a two-year transition period for operators to adapt, 'so that operators do not incur unjustified expenses'. Until that draft is adopted, no registration requirement applies to you as a traveller in Moldova.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Moldova?+
Yes. Since 1 January 2026, Moldova falls under 'Roam Like at Home': your plan works there at your domestic rate, just as in an EU member state. The European Commission confirms the rules are 'now fully operational for Moldova', and Moldova's government states that both Moldovan and European travellers can now call, text and use mobile internet 'without additional roaming charges', at the same speed and quality as at home, with free emergency calls. Keep the fair-use data limit in mind on a very cheap or unlimited plan, along with the rules that apply if you stay in Moldova for months at a time.
Which mobile networks operate in Moldova?+
Three: Orange Moldova, Moldcell, and Moldtelecom, which offers mobile service under the brand 'Unité'. All three were granted new 25-year spectrum licences by regulator ANRCETI in early 2025, in the 700 MHz, 1500 MHz and 3600 MHz bands. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 5G in Moldova?+
At trial stage, not yet commercially nationwide. Orange Moldova launched a 5G trial in June 2024 with speeds up to 2 Gbps at select locations in Chișinău; Moldcell has been partnering with Ericsson since May 2024 on its own 5G rollout. No commercial coverage figure has been published for either, so we quote none.
Do I need to register my SIM card in Moldova?+
No, not yet: Moldova has no mandatory SIM registration law in force. The Interior Ministry is working on a draft law, which went to public consultation on 3 February 2026 and closed on 16 February 2026; it would require an ID card or passport when buying a SIM, aimed at combating fraud and cybercrime, with a two-year transition period envisaged for operators. Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin described adoption as something for 'the near future', without giving a specific date. Until that draft is passed, no registration requirement applies in Moldova.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Moldova eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Moldova, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Moldova eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
