Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Mongolia
Mongolia has five mobile operators: Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel, GMobile, and ONDO. ONDO is the newest entrant, confirmed by press reporting as the fifth operator alongside Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel and GMobile; it received its mobile services licence from Mongolia's Communications Regulatory Commission (CRC) dated 24 September 2021, with a concession reported to expire on 10 September 2031. All five operators launched 5G together nationally on 20 May 2025, when licences for the next-generation mobile system were granted to each of them, marking the start of what was described as nationwide 5G deployment. The initial rollout covers Ulaanbaatar and all 21 provincial centres. The government's own stated goal is 70% population coverage by 2027 — a target, not a figure already reached — with regulatory approvals permitting operators to extend deployment in phases to address the country's geography. Outside the capital and the provincial centres, plan for 4G, or no signal at all in more remote areas; no specific coverage figure exists for any particular region, so we are not inventing one.
Roaming in Mongolia without an eSIM
Mongolia is outside the EU's 'Roam Like at Home' area, which covers only the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and separately Moldova and Ukraine. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not travel with you: your home operator bills Mongolian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the European price caps that apply inside that zone. The European Commission's own advice is to check that tariff with your provider before you fly.
A tourist eSIM from Mongolia's own operator
Unitel sells a dedicated 'Tour' eSIM with instant activation, offered in tiered bundles — a smaller data allowance over roughly 10 days, scaling up to a larger allowance over roughly 30 days. The signup flow shows a 'Your details' step, but the specific fields were not confirmed, so we cannot say whether a passport is required; neither assumption is something we are stating as fact.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks are there in Mongolia?+
Five: Mobicom, Unitel, Skytel, GMobile, and ONDO. ONDO is the newest, having received its licence from the Communications Regulatory Commission in September 2021.
Is there 5G in Mongolia?+
Yes, launched nationally on 20 May 2025 by all five operators, starting in Ulaanbaatar and the 21 provincial centres. The government's own target is 70% population coverage by 2027 — not a figure already achieved.
Will I have signal outside Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia?+
The rollout is phased and starts with the capital and the provincial centres; outside those areas, plan for 4G or no signal at all. No specific coverage percentage exists for any particular region, including the Gobi, so we do not quote one.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle work in Mongolia?+
No. Mongolia is outside the EU roaming zone, so the European price caps do not apply, and your operator bills Mongolian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check that rate with your provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Mongolia eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Mongolia, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Mongolia eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
