Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Nepal
Nepal has two operators we could confirm: Nepal Telecom, the state-owned company, and Ncell. Nepal Telecom puts its 4G LTE network in the window and publishes the LTE bands it uses; Ncell names no network generation on its homepage but promotes free VoLTE, which implies an LTE network. 5G is not commercial: the regulator NTA has a draft plan out for consultation that it itself calls 'Nepal's Road to 5G' — a roadmap inviting comments, not a report on an existing network — and neither operator advertises 5G. So count on 4G.
Roaming in Nepal without an eSIM
Nepal is outside the EU roaming zone. 'Roam Like at Home' covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine; Nepal is not on that list. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not apply: your operator bills Nepali data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that operate inside the zone. On a trek of several weeks, where you load maps and let people at home know where you are, that mounts up. Ask your provider what it costs before you go.
Being connected the moment you land in Kathmandu
Nepal is not a hard country to get online in, and we are not going to claim otherwise. Ncell sells SIM cards at Tribhuvan International Airport, at its own centres at major entry points and in cities, and through authorised retailers nationwide, alongside its own tourist eSIM. There is one condition the operator sets itself: bring your original passport to register and activate the SIM card. That is where our difference sits. You arrange it at home, you do not queue at a counter after a long flight, and your phone connects as soon as it comes back on.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Nepal?+
The eSIM connects to local networks. Nepal Telecom, the state-owned operator, and Ncell are the two we could confirm through their own sites. Nepal Telecom advertises a 4G LTE network and publishes the bands it uses; Ncell names no generation on its homepage but promotes VoLTE, which implies an LTE network.
Is there 5G in Nepal?+
Not commercially. The regulator NTA has a draft plan out for public consultation that it calls 'Nepal's Road to 5G' — a roadmap inviting comments, not a report on a network in service. And neither operator advertises a 5G service. So plan for 4G; that is the baseline you will be working on in Nepal.
Do I need my passport for a SIM card in Nepal?+
For a local SIM, yes. Ncell's own tourist-SIM terms say to bring your original passport to register and activate the SIM card. An eSIM you activate before departure asks nothing of the kind: you are connected the moment your phone comes back on after landing.
Can I buy a SIM at Kathmandu airport?+
Yes. Ncell sells SIM cards at Tribhuvan International Airport, at its own centres at major entry points and in cities, and through authorised retailers nationwide; it also sells its own tourist eSIM. So we will not pretend Nepal is hard to get connected in. Our difference is the timing: sorted from home, no counter, no queue on arrival.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Nepal eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Nepal, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Nepal eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
