Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in North Macedonia
A1 Makedonija states on its own site that it began building its 5G network in 2022, naming Skopje, Kumanovo, Bitola, Prilep, Ohrid, Tetovo and Gostivar among the places it covers. That is the most reliable 5G information publicly available for this country. Outside those towns, 4G is the norm: the regulator AEK publishes the operators' GSM, UMTS and LTE coverage maps, which confirms LTE is deployed. No percentage accompanies them, so plan around 4G as your working baseline and 5G in the towns listed.
Roaming in North Macedonia without an eSIM
North Macedonia sits outside the EU roaming zone. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not apply automatically, and the EU price caps that operate inside the zone are absent. The European Commission proposed negotiations in February 2026 on extending 'Roam Like at Home' to the Western Balkans and the Council gave it a mandate in June 2026, but nothing is in force and there is no implementation date. The voluntary declaration operators signed in December 2022 lowers the data roaming rate and binds only its signatories.
What the regulator AEK publishes about coverage — and what it does not
AEK runs quality-of-service measurements, publishes the operators' coverage maps, released its 2025 market analysis in August 2026 and offers an interactive tool for next-generation access networks. What is missing is a 4G or 5G coverage percentage, on any page at all. The market data sits inside JavaScript applications that return no readable tables. That is why this page carries no percentage, no operator count and no verdict on which regions are weakest. What we do know is above; the rest we leave blank.
Frequently asked questions
Which network does the eSIM use in North Macedonia?+
The eSIM connects to a local network. A1 Makedonija is the operator we could confirm with certainty, through its own site and the regulator AEK's consumer portal. We are not putting a total number of mobile operators on this page — we could not establish it, and we would rather not invent one.
Is there 5G in North Macedonia?+
Partly. A1 says it began building its 5G network in 2022 and lists Skopje, Kumanovo, Bitola, Prilep, Ohrid, Tetovo and Gostivar among the places it serves. Outside those, 4G is the norm. AEK publishes no national coverage percentage for either 4G or 5G.
Will I have mobile internet outside Skopje?+
Yes, in the sense that LTE is deployed across the country: AEK publishes the operators' GSM, UMTS and LTE coverage maps. How far it reaches in numbers we do not know, because the regulator gives no percentages. So assume 4G is your baseline and that 5G stays in the towns A1 names.
Is North Macedonia covered by EU roaming?+
No. The country is outside the EU roaming zone, so your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not apply automatically and the EU price caps do not apply either. The EU has been negotiating since 2026 on extending 'Roam Like at Home' to the Western Balkans, but none of it is in force yet.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my North Macedonia eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in North Macedonia, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new North Macedonia eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
