Who is this Norway eSIM for?
For a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Norway is, through the European Economic Area (EEA), legally equivalent to home: your plan works there at your domestic rate, a right your operator cannot set aside. This eSIM is for anyone arriving from outside the EU or EEA who would otherwise pay their home operator's full international rate, anyone on a very cheap or unlimited plan who runs into the fair-use data limit, and anyone staying in Norway for months at a time. For non-EU/EEA travellers there is one more thing: a local prepaid SIM card must legally be registered, a step a pre-purchased eSIM avoids.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Norway
Norway ranks among the best mobile networks the European Commission compared, EU member states included. Its own report measures 99.7% 5G household coverage and the highest 5G non-standalone availability of any non-EU market compared: 71.0%, against an EU27 average of 55.0%. Norway also outperforms the EU average in rural areas. The country has the second-highest 5G base-station density of any market compared, and directs 80% of its mobile investment into 5G. Major operators plan to close older 2G networks during 2025 — relevant for very old handsets, not for roaming costs.
Your Belgian or Dutch plan in Norway
Norway is part of 'Roam Like at Home' through the EEA — a legal obligation, not a favour from your operator. Your plan works there at your domestic rate, exactly as in an EU country. On a very cheap or unlimited plan your operator may cap what you use abroad, in proportion to what you pay, and must tell you in advance and alert you once you reach that limit. For a long stay, your operator may check over at least four months whether you spend more time outside your own country than in it and use more abroad than at home; only then, after a warning with at least two weeks to adjust, may a surcharge be applied.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Norway?+
Yes. Norway is not in the EU, but it is in the European Economic Area (EEA), which makes the European roaming rules just as binding as in an EU country — this is not the operator's choice. Keep the fair-use data limit in mind on a very cheap or unlimited plan, along with the rules that apply if you stay in Norway for months at a time.
Do I need to register a local prepaid SIM card in Norway?+
Yes. Norway is on the list of countries with a legal registration requirement for prepaid SIM cards. Exactly which ID is needed, and whether a short-stay tourist can complete it, is not known — an eSIM bought in advance avoids that step altogether.
How good is mobile coverage in Norway?+
Exceptional. In its own comparative report, the European Commission singles out Norway with 99.7% 5G household coverage and the highest 5G non-standalone availability of any non-EU market compared: 71.0%, against an EU27 average of 55.0%. Norway also outperforms the EU average in rural areas.
Does Norway also have dense 5G infrastructure?+
Yes, more than almost any other market the European Commission compared. Norway has the second-highest 5G base-station density of any market in the report, and directs 80% of its mobile investment into 5G, the largest share of any market compared.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Norway eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Norway, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Norway eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
