Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Oman
Oman is the country in this group whose operators are the most candid. Omantel and Ooredoo Oman both sell mobile internet there; 4G is the working baseline at both, with Omantel publishing its 4G LTE service and a coverage map, and Ooredoo running a Manzili 4G offer alongside its 5G products.
On 5G, Ooredoo is unusually direct: '5G is available only in selected parts of Oman', adding that the number of locations is growing. You reach it through the postpaid Shahry or prepaid Shababiah plans. Omantel offers 5G Mobility and lets you check on a map whether your area is covered. Nobody publishes a percentage, and we do not repeat the generic speed promises from the marketing. The practical conclusion: plan for 4G, and treat 5G in the main cities as a bonus.
Roaming in Oman without an eSIM
Oman is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Oman is not among them. Your operator therefore bills Omani data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. The reverse holds as well: Omantel says its tourist SIM can only be used locally and does not include roaming, although it does allow local and international calls and texts.
A local SIM in Oman means your passport at a counter
This is where Oman differs from most destinations: you do not pick up a local SIM anonymously. Omantel says you visit an outlet or partner 'with a valid passport'. Ooredoo Oman states that for foreign nationals 'an original passport is required for verification', and for GCC nationals an original ID or passport. Two operators, two pages, the same rule.
On top of that, Ooredoo's Tourist SIM explicitly cannot be sold to Omani nationals or resident cardholders and runs for 30 days, while Omantel's also runs 30 days and starts with 1 GB of local data valid for one day. An eSIM bought before departure skips that step entirely: no counter, no passport handed across a desk, no queue on arrival. The price is settled before you leave, in euros and in your own language, and your phone has data the moment it registers in Oman.
Frequently asked questions
Is there 5G in Oman?+
Yes, but not everywhere — and the operator says so itself. Ooredoo Oman writes, word for word: '5G is available only in selected parts of Oman', and offers 5G through its postpaid Shahry and prepaid Shababiah plans. Omantel confirms the picture with its 5G Mobility service and a map you can use to check whether your area has 5G. Neither publishes a coverage percentage. So plan around 4G and treat 5G as a bonus.
Which mobile networks operate in Oman?+
We name two, because those are the two we could confirm from their own sites: Omantel and Ooredoo Oman. Both sell mobile service to residents and visitors, and both publish a coverage map. How many mobile networks Oman has in total we will not say — we could not establish it. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network, with no operator for you to choose.
Do I need my passport for a local SIM in Oman?+
Yes, and both operators put it in writing. Omantel says you visit your nearest Omantel outlet or partner 'with a valid passport'. Ooredoo Oman states that for foreign nationals 'an original passport is required for verification', and for GCC nationals an original ID or passport. Ooredoo's Tourist SIM also cannot be sold to Omani nationals or resident cardholders, and it is valid for 30 days.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Oman?+
No. Oman sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you and the EU price caps do not apply. Your operator bills Omani data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Watch the reverse too: Omantel's tourist SIM is explicitly for local use and includes no roaming, so it will not cover you elsewhere in the region.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Oman eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Oman, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Oman eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
