Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Panama: what is published and what is not

Panama is the country in this group about which least can be evidenced, and we would rather not fill that gap with guesswork. The regulator ASEP oversees telecoms alongside electricity, water and sewage, and describes its objective for the sector as accelerating its modernisation and development and promoting low user tariffs and fair competition. It publishes no operator list, no coverage map and no national figure anywhere we could read.

What we could confirm are two names: Más Móvil, described by its parent Liberty Latin America as a Panamanian provider of fixed and mobile services, and Tigo Panamá, whose help centre covers activating a prepaid eSIM. On 4G or 5G coverage we make no claim: we have no source for it, and a guess is not information. What you take to Panama, then, is not a promise about network technology but clarity about your costs.

Roaming in Panama without an eSIM

Panama is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Panama is not among them. Your operator therefore bills Panamanian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. In a country where so little is public, that tariff is the one thing you can genuinely pin down before you go — the European Commission advises asking your own provider for it.

Tigo sells a prepaid eSIM on the ground

Let us be straight: you are not stuck in Panama. Tigo Panamá supports a prepaid eSIM and puts activating one among its most-read help articles, so anyone who sorts it out locally will manage. We are not building this page on a scarcity that does not exist.

Our difference is timing and certainty. You buy from home before departure, pay in euros, read everything in your own language and see the price before you book — in a country where we cannot show you a coverage map or a registration rule in advance, that is exactly the piece of uncertainty you can remove. Your own SIM card stays active alongside it for texts and bank codes on your usual number.

Frequently asked questions

Is there 4G and 5G in Panama?+

We cannot support that with any source, so we write nothing about it in either direction. The regulator ASEP publishes no coverage figure we could obtain, and the Panamanian operators' consumer sites were not readable for us. So we quote no network technology, no percentage and no city list. What is established is that local mobile networks exist for an eSIM to register on.

Which mobile networks operate in Panama?+

We can confirm two, each by a different route: Más Móvil, described by its parent Liberty Latin America as a Panamanian provider of services including mobile, and Tigo Panamá, whose help centre publishes instructions for activating a prepaid eSIM. How many mobile networks Panama has in total we will not say: ASEP publishes no operator list we could read.

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Panama?+

No. Panama sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you and the EU price caps do not apply. Your operator bills Panamanian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Ask your provider for that tariff before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.

Can I buy an eSIM once I am in Panama?+

Yes. Tigo Panamá supports a prepaid eSIM and lists activating one among its most-read help articles. Anyone who sorts it out on arrival will be fine, and we are not going to suggest otherwise. Our difference is when you buy: from home before departure, in euros, in your own language, with the price visible before you book.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Panama eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Panama, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Panama eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
