Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Qatar

Qatar is the one country in this group where the number of mobile networks can actually be evidenced. The regulator, the CRA — established by Emiri Decree 42 of 2014 — publishes a register of licensees, and two companies in it hold a mobile licence: Ooredoo and Vodafone. The rest of the register is fixed and satellite players: Qatar National Broadband Network for passive infrastructure, and Es'hailSat, QSAT, RigNet and Harris Salam for satellite.

On coverage the CRA is conspicuously quiet: its 5G page explains the technology and names no date, no operator and no percentage. What does exist comes from Vodafone Qatar, which publishes a coverage map with a separate 5G layer and states itself that the map is indicative and that terrain, buildings, weather and network load change the result. That 5G runs in Qatar is therefore settled; how far it reaches is published by nobody.

Roaming in Qatar without an eSIM

Qatar is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine. Orange Belgium confirms it in practice by putting Qatar on the country list for Daily Travel, the option it sells for destinations outside the European Union. Your operator therefore bills Qatari data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps — a meter that starts running the moment your phone registers after landing.

Ooredoo is in Hamad's arrivals hall — and you still buy ahead

Let us be straight: Doha sorts you out quickly. Ooredoo sells its Visitor SIM in the Qatar Duty Free store in the baggage collection area, at its own kiosks by Exits 2, 3 and 4 in the arrivals hall, and in the Day2Day store in that same hall. Online it also issues an eSIM instantly, in three plans valid for 7, 14 and 30 days. Availability is not the reason to buy ahead for Qatar.

What counts is that your phone already works before you walk into the arrivals hall, and that the price is settled before you leave — in euros and in your own language. There is one more practical point: at Vodafone Qatar, self-activating an Instant SIM includes the step 'Scan your QID/passport & complete verification'. That is that provider's own flow rather than a general Qatari rule, but it shows where the time goes when you sort it out on the spot.

Frequently asked questions

Which mobile networks operate in Qatar?+

Two. The regulator, the CRA, keeps a public register of licensees, and in it both Ooredoo and Vodafone hold a fixed and a mobile licence. The other names in that register do not run a consumer mobile network: Qatar National Broadband Network manages passive fixed infrastructure, while Es'hailSat, QSAT, RigNet and Harris Salam work in satellite. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.

Is there 5G in Qatar?+

Yes. Vodafone Qatar publishes a coverage map with a separate 5G layer, and notes itself that the map is indicative only and that real coverage varies with terrain, buildings, weather and network conditions. No coverage percentage is published anywhere. The regulator's own 5G page only explains the technology, with no launch date, no operator and no figure, so we quote none either.

Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Qatar?+

No. Qatar sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you and the EU price caps do not apply. Orange Belgium even lists Qatar explicitly on the country list for Daily Travel, its option for destinations outside the European Union. Your operator bills Qatari data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff; ask what that costs before you fly.

Can I buy a SIM card at Doha airport?+

Yes, and we are not hiding it. Ooredoo sells its Visitor SIM at several points inside Hamad International Airport: the Qatar Duty Free store in the baggage collection area, its own kiosks at Exits 2, 3 and 4 in the arrivals hall, and the Day2Day store in that same hall. Online, Ooredoo also issues an eSIM instantly, in three plans valid for 7, 14 and 30 days. So our difference is not availability — it is when you buy.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Qatar eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Qatar, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Qatar eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
