Who is this Réunion eSIM for?
For a Belgian or Dutch SIM card, Réunion counts as home territory under EU law: the island is a French overseas department and an outermost region of the European Union, sitting inside 'Roam Like at Home' on exactly the same legal footing as any other EU member state. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves, each on its own roaming page: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list Réunion individually in their EU zone, alongside Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Mayotte. For our core customer, there's no roaming problem to solve here. The three situations where an eSIM still makes sense are European in nature: arriving on a non-EU/EEA SIM, which gets no 'Roam Like at Home' benefit and pays the home operator's full international rate; being on an exceptionally cheap or unlimited home plan that runs into the fair-use data limit; and staying for months at a time, where the four-month periodic-travel rule can apply. One nuance worth knowing: Orange Réunion and SFR Réunion (SRR), the operators physically serving the island, hold mobile licences that are legally distinct from those covering mainland France — precisely the reason the Roaming Regulation itself cites for keeping Réunion on the same retail rate as the rest of the internal market, not as an exception to it.
Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Réunion
Four operators serve Réunion: Orange (Orange Réunion) and SFR (branded SRR), named directly by ARCEP as the two quality-of-service leaders, plus Zeop — the brand of Telco OI, which entered the market in 2019 — and Free (Free Réunion). In ARCEP's own 2024 measurement campaign (January–May 2024, published 24 July 2025, part of a survey covering more than 528,000 measurements across seven overseas territories and ten operators), SRR and Orange ranked first on the large majority of measured indicators, including mobile internet. 5G was measured on Réunion for the first time in this campaign. Réunion was the first French overseas department to launch commercial 5G, in summer 2022 — a year ahead of French Guiana and roughly three years ahead of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Mayotte. By the end of 2025, 86% of active SIM cards on Réunion were on 4G, the highest share of any territory measured, just ahead of Mayotte (85%) and well above the roughly 75% recorded for the grouped Antilles-Guyane zone; mainland France sits at 91%, with an 80% average across the French overseas departments as a whole. That 4G share measures usage among active SIM cards, not geographic coverage — no separate coverage percentage was found for Réunion this time.
Réunion compared with the other French overseas departments
Compared with the other French overseas departments, Réunion stands out on three documented points: the earliest 5G launch, the highest share of active 4G SIM cards, and a network that ARCEP itself names as the leader on nearly every measured indicator. No documented coverage problem was found for the island this time — no weak interior zone, unlike the situation in French Guiana. For anyone travelling from Belgium or the Netherlands, this mostly means there's no 'poor coverage' story to tell here: what's left are the three general European exceptions above.
Frequently asked questions
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Réunion?+
Yes. Réunion is a French overseas department and, like Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and French Guiana, an outermost region of the European Union, which puts it inside 'Roam Like at Home'. Belgian and Dutch operators confirm this themselves: Proximus, Orange Belgium, Telenet and BASE in Belgium, and KPN, Odido and Vodafone NL in the Netherlands, each list Réunion individually in their own EU roaming zone, so your plan works there at your domestic rate — no exception found at any of the seven operators checked.
Which mobile networks operate in Réunion?+
Four: Orange (Orange Réunion) and SFR (branded SRR) are named directly by ARCEP as the two quality-of-service leaders; Zeop, the brand of Telco OI which entered the market in 2019, and Free (Free Réunion) are the other two.
Do I need to register to buy a prepaid SIM in Réunion?+
Activating a local prepaid SIM in France — Réunion included, as French territory — requires presenting valid ID. This doesn't affect an Ariya eSIM, which you buy and install before you travel.
Which French overseas department got 5G first?+
Réunion, in summer 2022 according to ARCEP — a year ahead of French Guiana (summer 2023) and roughly three years ahead of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Mayotte, which all launched 5G only in the first half of 2025. Réunion also has the highest share of active 4G SIM cards: 86% at the end of 2025, just ahead of Mayotte (85%) and well above the roughly 75% recorded for the grouped Antilles-Guyane zone (Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana combined).
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Réunion eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Réunion, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Réunion eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
