Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Serbia
Serbia has three mobile operators — Telekom Srbija, A1 Srbija and Yettel — and the telecoms regulator RATEL publishes how many 5G base stations they run between them. On 4 August 2026 the count stood at 2,354: 1,013 at Telekom Srbija, 807 at A1 Srbija and 534 at Yettel. Yettel additionally runs 1,771 base stations on 4G/5G DSS, where both technologies share the same frequency band. 4G has been in place far longer and RATEL publishes coverage maps for it, but the regulator gives no coverage percentage — so neither will we.
Roaming in Serbia without an eSIM
Serbia sits outside the EU roaming zone, so your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not apply there automatically. The European Commission proposed opening negotiations in February 2026 to extend 'Roam Like at Home' to the Western Balkans, and the Council authorised the talks in June 2026 — but nothing is in force yet and no implementation date exists. What does exist is a voluntary declaration signed by operators in Tirana in December 2022. It lowers the data roaming rate, it does not remove it, and it binds only the operators that signed.
Counting 5G masts in Serbia: what the figure does and does not tell you
RATEL's number is a count of base stations, not a coverage map. 2,354 active gNodeBs across three networks show that 5G is genuinely commercial in Serbia; they say nothing about what share of the country or the population can reach it. That percentage is published nowhere: the coverage map sits behind a GIS application and the market portal returns no readable tables. We are not going to fill that gap with an estimate. In practice: plan around 4G as your working baseline and treat 5G as a bonus, because where it reaches is not on record.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Serbia?+
The eSIM connects to the local Serbian networks. Serbia has three mobile operators: Telekom Srbija, A1 Srbija and Yettel. Those are the names the telecoms regulator RATEL uses, and it tracks how many active 5G base stations each of them runs.
Is there 5G in Serbia?+
Yes. As of 4 August 2026 RATEL counted 2,354 active 5G base stations: 1,013 at Telekom Srbija, 807 at A1 Srbija and 534 at Yettel. That is a count of masts, not a coverage percentage — the regulator does not publish how far the network actually reaches.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle apply in Serbia?+
No. Serbia is outside the EU roaming zone, so the EU price caps do not apply and your operator bills Serbian data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check with your provider before you travel what that costs.
Does Serbia have EU roaming now?+
No. The European Commission proposed opening negotiations in February 2026 to extend 'Roam Like at Home' to the Western Balkans, and the Council gave it a mandate in June 2026 — but nothing is in force and no implementation date exists. The voluntary declaration operators signed in December 2022 lowers the data roaming rate; it does not make roaming free.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Serbia eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Serbia, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Serbia eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
