Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone has three operators currently in operation: Africell, Orange and Qcell, confirmed in regulator NatCA's own 2024 Annual Report. The same figures show rapid growth: mobile voice subscriptions rose from 6,944,709 (Q4 2023) to 8,200,229 (Q4 2024, +18.08%), and mobile internet subscriptions from 2,181,873 to 3,608,579 (+65.39%). NatCA itself notes these are subscriptions, not unique users — many people hold more than one SIM.
For coverage, NatCA's own Table 1.2 (2024 Annual Report) is the clearest source: nationwide geographic coverage stood, at end-2024, at 98.55% for 2G, 96.48% for 3G and 97% for 4G. 5G in Sierra Leone exists only at trial stage for now: Africell, Orange and Qcell tested it in 2024, but there has been no commercial launch.
Roaming in Sierra Leone without an eSIM
Sierra Leone is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine — Sierra Leone is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore stays behind: your operator bills every megabyte at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff with your provider before you go.
SIM cards and registration in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone ties SIM cards to a National Identification Number (NIN), issued by the National Civil Registration Authority. Regulator NatCA required all operators to complete this NIN-SIM linkage in 2024, and inspections that year led to more than 4,000 non-compliant SIM cards being seized. What is not confirmed is what document a visitor without a Sierra Leonean NIN must present to buy a first SIM card — no source describes a separate path for visitors. For anyone who would rather skip that question, the Ariya eSIM is already active before departure.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Sierra Leone?+
Three operators are currently in operation: Africell, Orange and Qcell, confirmed in regulator NatCA's own 2024 Annual Report. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 4G and 5G in Sierra Leone?+
NatCA's own 2024 Annual Report cites nationwide geographic coverage of 98.55% for 2G, 96.48% for 3G and 97% for 4G, as of end-2024. 5G exists only at trial stage at Africell, Orange and Qcell (2024); there is no commercial launch.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Sierra Leone?+
No. Sierra Leone sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area. Your operator bills Sierra Leonean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Check that tariff before you fly.
Do I need to register to buy a local SIM in Sierra Leone?+
Sierra Leone ties SIM cards to a National Identification Number (NIN); regulator NatCA had more than 4,000 non-compliant SIM cards seized in 2024. What document a visitor without a Sierra Leonean NIN must present is not confirmed.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Sierra Leone eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Sierra Leone, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Sierra Leone eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
