Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Singapore
Singapore has four mobile operators — M1, Singtel, StarHub and TPG Telecom — and SIMBA sells plans with eSIM and 5G on its own site as well. The only two traceable coverage figures come from the operators themselves: Singtel reported 5G standalone across more than 95% of the country's territory in July 2022, and M1 about 90% of Singapore in September 2022. Both are per-operator measurements and both are four years old; no figure from the regulator IMDA could be obtained.
What that means in practice: Singapore is a city-state with a dense network, and you are unlikely to spend your trip hunting for signal. So we attach no national percentage, and we do not pretend coverage is a problem you need to solve here. The more interesting question in Singapore is not whether you have a bar of signal, but what it costs you.
Roaming in Singapore without an eSIM
Singapore is outside the EU and the EEA, so 'Roam Like at Home' does not apply. That arrangement covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine, and Singapore is not among them. Your operator therefore bills Singaporean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that apply inside the zone. That is the real cost in Singapore: not weak coverage, but a meter that starts running the moment your phone registers on landing. The European Commission advises checking that tariff with your provider first.
Being straight about Singapore: the network is not the problem here
We are not going to tell you that you will be unreachable without an eSIM, because it is not true. Four operators, 5G standalone that Singtel put above 95% of the country's territory as far back as 2022, and local providers selling eSIMs themselves — SIMBA straight from its website. Anyone who sorts it out on arrival will be fine. Coverage is not the reason to buy ahead for Singapore.
Cost and time are. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle does not apply, and your operator bills out of bundle with no EU price caps. Buy before you go and the price is settled before you leave, in euros and in your own language, and your phone has data the moment the plane lands — no shop, no queue, no hunting for wifi at Changi. Your own SIM card stays active alongside it for texts and bank codes on your usual number.
Frequently asked questions
Which mobile networks operate in Singapore?+
Singapore has four mobile operators: M1, Singtel, StarHub and TPG Telecom. SIMBA also operates there and sells plans with eSIM and 5G directly on its own site. The Ariya eSIM connects to a local network — there is no operator for you to choose.
Is there 5G in Singapore?+
Yes, and plenty of it. Singtel reported 5G standalone across more than 95% of the country's territory in July 2022, which it said was over three years ahead of the regulator's end-2025 target; M1 reported about 90% of Singapore in September 2022. Both are per-operator figures and both are now four years old. We could not obtain any figure from the regulator IMDA, so we quote none.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in Singapore?+
No. Singapore sits outside the EU and EEA 'Roam Like at Home' area, so your domestic bundle does not travel with you. Your operator bills Singaporean data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps. Ask what that costs before you fly — the European Commission gives travellers the same advice.
Do I actually need an eSIM in Singapore?+
Not for coverage: the network is not the problem here, and local providers sell eSIMs too — SIMBA does so directly from its own site. What remains true is that Singapore is outside the EU roaming zone, so your home bundle does not apply there, and you would rather not hunt for a shop on arrival. That is what buying before you fly solves.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Singapore eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Singapore, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Singapore eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
