Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in South Africa
South Africa has an unusually crowded operator field: Vodacom, MTN South Africa, Telkom, Cell C and Rain. Liquid Telecom also bought spectrum but is not a consumer operator. In March 2022 the regulator ICASA ran the country's long-delayed auction — an opt-in phase on 8 March, the main auction from 10 to 17 March — allocating the 700 and 800 MHz bands together with 2.6 and 3.5 GHz. Those bands deliver exactly the mix a traveller benefits from: 700 and 800 MHz for reach, 2.6 and 3.5 GHz for speed in the cities.
The one hard coverage figure comes from Vodacom itself: its Integrated Report 2026 puts 4G coverage at 99.4% of South Africa's population, against 99.3% the year before. Read that as Vodacom's network, not as the country. 5G is commercially live — Vodacom and MTN had it running in South African cities before the 2022 auction — but no national 5G coverage percentage is published, so you will not find one here either.
Roaming in South Africa without an eSIM
South Africa sits outside the European roaming area. 'Roam Like at Home' covers the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine, and South Africa is not among them. Your Belgian or Dutch plan therefore does not work at your domestic rate: your operator bills South African data at its own out-of-bundle rate, without the European price caps that apply inside the zone. The European Commission warns explicitly that roaming outside the EU and EEA can be expensive and advises asking your provider beforehand. Anyone visiting family and staying for weeks notices that sooner than someone spending a week in Cape Town.
Power outages and the reliability of mobile internet in South Africa
The honest caveat about South Africa is not coverage but electricity. Vodacom writes it plainly in its Integrated Report 2026: its network performance was once again tested by energy instability. In the same report the operator describes a Battery Booster system that uses data analytics to intelligently manage power during outages, which Vodacom says significantly improves network availability and keeps customers connected through those periods. Two things follow. Outages are a normal operating condition for South African networks, and operators invest specifically in batteries and backup to keep sites running. Save your route, your maps and your tickets offline and you will barely notice.
Frequently asked questions
How good is 4G coverage in South Africa?+
Vodacom's Integrated Report 2026 states that its 4G network reaches 99.4% of South Africa's population, up from 99.3% a year earlier. Note the wording: that is Vodacom's network, not a national figure covering every operator. It is, however, the one hard coverage number a South African operator publishes itself.
Is there 5G in South Africa?+
Yes. Vodacom and MTN were already running commercial 5G in South African cities before the March 2022 spectrum auction, in which the regulator ICASA allocated the 700 and 800 MHz bands along with 2.6 and 3.5 GHz. No national 5G coverage percentage is published anywhere, so we do not quote one.
Does my Belgian or Dutch plan work in South Africa?+
Not at your domestic rate. South Africa lies outside 'Roam Like at Home', which covers only the 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine. Your operator bills South African data at its own out-of-bundle rate, with no European price caps. Check that rate before you travel — the European Commission advises the same.
Do power outages affect mobile internet in South Africa?+
They are a known factor. Vodacom writes in its 2026 report that its network performance was once again tested by energy instability, and describes a Battery Booster system that uses data analytics to manage power during outages in order to keep availability up. Expect short interruptions rather than a country without signal.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my South Africa eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in South Africa, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new South Africa eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
