Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Sri Lanka
Dialog Axiata, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch are the three operators we could confirm through their own sites; we are not giving a total. All three have 4G: Dialog sells mobile broadband over 4G with a coverage map attached, SLT-Mobitel lists 3G and 4G/LTE for mobile, and Hutch runs a 4G upgrade programme and sells a 4G SIM. 5G is a different picture. Dialog advertises it and its coverage checker has a 5G layer of its own next to voice and 4G; the other two do not mention it. Without a launch date or a coverage figure, 4G is your realistic baseline.
Roaming in Sri Lanka without an eSIM
Sri Lanka is outside the EU roaming zone. 'Roam Like at Home' covers the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, along with Moldova and Ukraine; South Asia falls outside it. Your Belgian or Dutch bundle therefore does not apply: your operator bills Sri Lankan data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff, without the EU price caps that operate inside the zone. On a touring holiday where you navigate, book transport and share photos every day, that adds up fast. The European Commission's own advice is to check with your provider before you travel.
A local SIM in Sri Lanka costs you your passport at the counter
There is no shortage of places to buy one: Dialog has two stores right after the customs desk in the arrivals lobby, plus 136 customer experience centres and authorised retailers across the island, and you can reserve online and collect later. So we will not pretend you would be offline without us. The real difference is the procedure. Dialog's own terms say you must present your passport to a customer service representative for verification before the prepaid SIM is activated. An eSIM you activate at home asks nothing of the kind — and saves you a queue after a night flight.
Frequently asked questions
Which networks does the eSIM use in Sri Lanka?+
The eSIM connects to local networks. We confirmed Dialog Axiata, SLT-Mobitel and Hutch through their own sites, and all three advertise 4G. We are not giving a total number of operators, because we could not establish one.
Is there 5G in Sri Lanka?+
Partly. Dialog advertises a 5G service and its coverage checker carries a separate 5G layer alongside voice and 4G. SLT-Mobitel names only 3G and 4G/LTE, and Hutch does not mention 5G at all. With no launch date, no list of cities and no coverage figure, plan for 4G and treat 5G as a bonus in the larger cities.
Do I need my passport for a local SIM in Sri Lanka?+
With Dialog, yes. The operator's own tourist-SIM terms say you must present your passport to a customer service representative for verification before the prepaid SIM is activated. That is that operator's policy; we could not establish a national registration law. An eSIM you activate before departure does not put you at a counter.
Does my Belgian or Dutch bundle apply in Sri Lanka?+
No. Sri Lanka is outside the EU roaming zone, so the EU price caps do not apply and your operator bills Sri Lankan data at its own out-of-bundle roaming tariff. Check with your own provider before you travel.
Does my phone support eSIM?+
Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.
When should I activate my Sri Lanka eSIM?+
Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Sri Lanka, so your plan starts at the right time.
How do I receive my eSIM?+
Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.
Can I top up my plan?+
Yes, simply buy a new Sri Lanka eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
