Mobile internet, 4G and 5G in Switzerland

Switzerland has two authorities. BAKOM is the federal office of communication; ComCom is the independent commission that grants mobile radio licences, established by the Telecommunications Act of 30 April 1997. ComCom describes its aim as maintaining and further developing the country's three qualitatively high-performing mobile networks. Those three are Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt — names that come from the operators themselves, not from the regulator.

Coverage figures come only from the market. Swisscom states, in its own words, '99% coverage with 5G and 89% with even faster 5G+', without saying whether that means population or territory, so we quote it exactly as written. Sunrise runs 5G including 5G Standalone, and Salt provides both 4G and 5G. None of the three publishes a national 4G percentage, and neither does BAKOM.

Roaming in Switzerland without an eSIM: the answer depends on your operator

Legally it is simple: Switzerland is outside the EU and the EEA, so the European roaming rules and their price caps do not apply. Commercially it is not, and that is exactly where Belgian and Dutch subscribers part ways. For Belgium the case holds in full. Proximus writes that Switzerland is not among the countries where European regulations apply, Orange sells it through Daily Travel as a destination outside the European Union, Telenet offers a pass covering Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland, and BASE puts it on its list of paid options.

For Dutch subscribers it is the other way round. KPN lists Switzerland among the countries where your domestic bundle applies, Vodafone counts it as Zone 1: EU and advertises the fact, and Odido includes it on Unlimited Snelst, Plus and Premium. On Unlimited Start, Unlimited Basis and the 2, 10 and 20 GB plans, Switzerland is not included. That is a provider's choice, not a European obligation.

When an eSIM for Switzerland actually solves something

For a Belgian traveller the answer is short. Your bundle stops at the border, and what you pay after that depends on the pass or option your operator sells you. An eSIM bought before departure settles that cost in advance and works the moment your phone registers on a Swiss network.

For a Dutch traveller we are not going to pretend. On KPN or Vodafone, or on one of Odido's three highest Unlimited plans, you need nothing extra in Switzerland. What remains is still real: the lower Odido plans and the 2, 10 and 20 GB bundles, prepaid users, longer stays where your provider's fair-use rules start to matter, and a second handset or data-only device without a plan of its own. In those cases you are better off buying the data from home, in euros and in your own language.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Belgian bundle work in Switzerland?+

No. Switzerland sits outside the EU and the EEA, and all four Belgian operators treat it that way. Proximus says so in as many words: 'Switzerland is not one of the countries where European regulations apply.' Orange lists Switzerland on the country list for Daily Travel, its option for destinations outside the European Union. Telenet sells a dedicated roaming pass covering Andorra, Monaco and Switzerland. And at BASE, Switzerland appears on the list of countries needing a paid roaming option rather than in the no-surcharge zone.

Does my Dutch bundle work in Switzerland?+

Usually yes — but not because of the EU. KPN lists Switzerland on its alphabetical list of countries where your domestic rates apply. Vodafone counts it as Zone 1: EU and even advertises the fact. Odido includes it on Unlimited Snelst, Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Premium, but not on Unlimited Start, Unlimited Basis or the 2, 10 and 20 GB plans. So it is your provider's commercial choice rather than a European rule: check which plan you are actually on.

Is there 5G in Switzerland?+

Yes. Switzerland has three mobile networks — Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt — and all three sell 5G. Only Swisscom publishes a figure, in its own words: '99% coverage with 5G and 89% with even faster 5G+'. The page does not say whether that means territory or population, so we do not convert it. Sunrise runs 5G including 5G Standalone, and Salt provides both 4G and 5G. No national 4G percentage is published anywhere.

Do I actually need an eSIM in Switzerland?+

Often not, and we would rather say so up front. On KPN or Vodafone, or on Odido's Unlimited Snelst, Plus or Premium, your bundle simply travels with you. An eSIM is worth considering on Odido Start or Basis and on the 2, 10 and 20 GB plans, on prepaid, on longer stays where your provider's fair-use rules come into play, and for a second handset or a data-only device with no plan of its own.

Does my phone support eSIM?+

Most recent smartphones (iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel) support eSIM. Check your settings for an 'Add eSIM' option.

When should I activate my Switzerland eSIM?+

Install the eSIM before departure over wifi, but only enable data roaming once you arrive in Switzerland, so your plan starts at the right time.

How do I receive my eSIM?+

Right after payment you receive the QR code by email and in your Ariya Mobile account. Remember to check your spam folder.

Can I top up my plan?+

Yes, simply buy a new Switzerland eSIM plan when your data or validity runs out.
